Realistically how much mileage should you reasonably expect to get out of wheels before they are replaced and what signs are there that you should replace them. Is it just when spokes start breaking, and the rim looks worn.

A rim worn concave is worn out. Broken spokes can be replaced, hubs can sometimes be repaired but a worn rim is toast and needs to be replaced.

In terms of mileage, well cared quality wheels will last very long, I don't think 10000k is unusual. A lot depends on the location, terrain, weather, but they need to be serviced now and then sure. Commuting wheels would not last long as braking surface wears out before anything else perhaps.

And there was I disappointed about the rim wear on a pair of Zondas which have done at least 20,000kms.

Love Zondas... close to 10000k on them myself, did have to open hubs though.
