Had a death in the family and trying to organise music for the church. He loved hymns and sang them around the house. I'd love to get some get hymns that we can play that people can sing along to. Ones we have in mind so far are The Lord is my Shepard, Be still my lord, be thou my vision, nearer my god to thee. I need to somehow get these all on a cd for the church, preferably with an achual choir etc singing, and then people can sing along. Does anyone any ideas or where I can download these, or if you can help pleasse pm me. What other hymns would be recommmended that are big church belters that people can sing along to?
    Thanks

Likely the first one you are looking for is Be Still my Soul, the Lord is by Thy Side.

iTunes is the best place to download from - you can buy individual tracks for 99c, and you can check out the track and whether it sounds sing-along-to-able before buying.

BUT - check with the church: do you really need a CD - and (important part) and do they have facilities for playing one? Or is there any organist / musician / choir / cantor who may help?

Also, re people singing along: if it's a Catholic church in Ireland, then it's a fair bet that people will simply turn up their noses and refuse to sing. Yes, even the folks who can sing full well. There are exceptions, but most Catholic parishes here are like this. (If CoI or overseas, this isn't such an issue).

And, if you want people to sing, then you have to give them the words of the hymns. Ideally on a service sheet which you make for the funeral, or on a projection system. Hymnals don't work so well - people aren't used to opening them in Ireland!

The King of Love my shepherd is ...
    Abide with me.
    Be still my soul.
    Old rugged cross.
    Nearer my God to thee.
Tell me the old old story.

If there is projector/sound system available, there are a million youtube vids with the words on them, for hymns and contemporary songs.

With CoI funerals there shouldn't be much of a problem as there is usually an organist and the CoI's will always sing. If its an RC funeral then you won't have a singing congregation, from my experience anyway, but you might have the bonus of an actual church choir on duty, but you might have to pay for that privilege. In funerals in the CoI you can see the CoI's singing out and the RC's not. That's just the way it is. Hope it goes well for you anyway. Oh, and if its CoI you need to get your service sheets with hymns printed out but the minister should advise you.
