Realise this is a bit of a how long is a piece of string question but was looking for a steer on the what constitutes prime grassland and marginal grassland.

Looking at a piece of land for sale which is grazing land, well fenced, laid out etc but quality of grass is very poor and I'd say has not had a sniff of fert in 10 years.

You could not describe it as quality pasture but wonder is it marginal?

In reality the gap between marginal and quality grassland is huge.
Marginal would be hill type and quality would be in good fertility good ph etc producing high tonnage of grass

    Auctioneers gap though | |

that's what I figured, it's definitely not hill type rubbish, its just been neglected for while, although it has been cut and grazed.

take a small garden spade and dig a few small holes to see soil type around different fields
it sounds like good land that needs a bit of work.
marginal land you will have 6 or 7 month winters for cattle because its holding too much water.
