Beckoning by other road users (Driving Test)

Quick question regarding the rules behind beckoning on the RSA Driving Test.

I had a friend fail the test twice due to allegedly responding (by manoeuvring), to another road user beckoning them in junctions e.g. person turning right in a yellow box with slow moving traffic in the opposite direction, and general T-based junction scenarios [turning right at a stop sign, from a minor to major road, with another road user who's approaching the yellow box from the left, turning into the minor road, subsequently beckoning the driver on].

(bear in mind, it wasn't the only influencer to the failures but had an impact nonetheless)

I found this quite unusual as it's become common practice for myself over the years, and most other road users. Thoughts?

Never ever yield right of way (this is the person beckoning, I mean). Nearly saw a cyclist killed today because somebody beckoned somebody out into a junction.

20 years ago, I lost a car this way because someone beckoned me to go first without checking to see if the way was clear for me to go. I got hit smartly from behind and I was lucky I wasn't hit in the driver's side door.

The reason this is so dangerous is because you can trust ONLY your own perception of the road ahead. Allowing someone to beckon you on is like driving blindfolded and relying on the satnav to tell you where to go.

My understanding of this is that you may not beckon anyone during the test. However if someone beckons you, and you make all the necessary checks and deem it safe to proceed then you may do so. Not doing so could result in a lack of progress fault.

As an aside I make a rule of never, beckoning anyone if I can help it. Too many factors that I can't control which could happen as a result.

If they aren't doing the checks themselves when beckoned to make sure that the manoeuvre is safe then they should be failed for it. I've done the HGV and bus test and sometimes the only way onto a road is by beckoning but I still had to do make sure it was safe myself before moving.

I never beckon other road users. What I do is leave plenty of room for them to make up their own mind.

I could see it being marked as a fault if you are technically failing to yield right of way to the beckoner, but that could be rather nitpicky depending on the situation, so I'm not sure if you'd get marked just for that. Of course it would certainly be a fault if you proceeded without properly checking for other traffic (e.g. blindly pulling out because someone beckoned you when you don't have proper visibility).

Beckoning to other drivers is always a fault. You should follow the rules like not blocking junctions, of course, but don't ever gesture to other drivers; let them make their own decisions on how to proceed.
