I've a 2 week old calf who was very sick with scour last week and was finally put on a drip for 24 hours which saved him. The scour has dried up and he is sucking the cow fine again but is still a bit off form or lacking energy. Anybody have any good ideas to get him going? Should I still be feeding lectate during the day as well? Any suggestions welcome!

Effydral is good for rehydration and preventing acidosis so if you could give him that twice a day it may help. It's a tablet dissolved in a litre of water so shouldn't suppress the appetite for milk. Theres this stuff called bimasdat or something that cousins with sucklers find good, not sure on spelling but the vet would know it may be handier for ya it's just a dose back the throat a few days. Other than that make sure she is actually getting milk when she is suckling as sometimes they may look like they are drinking but they may actually be taking in feck all as they may still be weak

It seems to me that the Effydral is a good suggestion.

whats his dung like, if its white pasty stuff he might have touch of acidosis, its makes calves very lethargic

Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone - I suppose he needs more hydration still besides the milk as he's very lazy. Will get some more into him today.

He had a temp of 104 today so got a bunch of stuff from the vets.... Norodine injection/Rehydion gel/ and more lectate. Watery scour after starting up again. Bought a natural yogurt this evening, hopefully it will do him some good. Have another bull calf who is not looking much better. It's an awful dose thats going around!
