Condenser boiler flue

What are the limitations on the location of the flue from a condenser boiler? A friend said we could locate the boiler just outside the original footprint of the house, with a vertical flue going out the roof (we are adding a one story flat roofed extension to a terraced roof). The builder said the boiler can't be located there, it should be moved to the end of the extension (I.e. The back wall) with the flue discharging out of the back wall. The boiler would look better if we could locate it just outside the original footprint rather than at the end of the kitchen, but I'm not sure if that is a good location for the flue.
