What's Arts with Journalism like?

    Hi there!
I want to study Journalism next year as I think that is what my dream job would be, but I also think I might like teaching and I would like to have it as a 'plan B.'
I am torn between Journalism in UL (where you do New Media + an arts subject) and the Arts and Journalism course in NUIG which allows me do two arts subjects.

The only thing putting me off NUIG is that there's no Media mentioned in the name, I was wondering is there Media covered within the Journalism modules?
Could anyone give me a student's perspective of what's covered and not just the somewhat abstract description on the website :P
Is there much 'hand's on' kind of work? Do you learn how to make use of resources Journalists might use nowadays eg. internet / camera's etc or is it all writing and learning about journalistic law / journalistic writing etc
And if not, do you think I could pick up those skills myself by getting involved in the photography society, college radio etc.

Sorry this post is kind of long and thanks in advance for your help!

There is plenty to do with media and communication involved in the course.
Don't do the course but have done modules with the head of the journalism course and he focuses a lot on communication, interplay of technological change, regulation
The journalism students do learn a lot on those skills but as you say you can easily pick those skills up outside the lecture hall in societies and clubs.
Sin is the uni's newspaper but there's also nothing stopping you creating a new one as it would be great to see more options. Quite a few other uni's have more than 1 student publication and we should look to have one as well.
