Anyone ever build one? And do they have much success in the wild?

Not personally, Joe. I don't fancy getting a huge erection ten foot off the floor. I know a lad who has done though. Don't ask me how he manages it.

Ye could crawl around this place though:

Never built one but helped put many up over the years. Success rate was not great. There needs to be Barn Owls about in the first place for any level of success.

I built one this winter gone from the instructions here - http://www.barnowltrust.org.uk/barn-owl-nestbox/barn-owl-nestboxes/

We are limited with locations to put it but have it on the side of a large shed now.. fingers crossed it is used, I have seen a barn owl in the area on two occasions in the past couple of years..

My advice is to put one up and take a chance with them - you'll never know if it works unless you try!

There is at least one in the area Srameen. I was hoping a box might give them a helping hand. I built one in the workshop, is there any need to paint it? I plan to put it up and just leave it and them to their own devices...

Great job. No, do not paint it. Good luck with it.

Pretty much in the same situation as yourself. Spotted 4 times the last two years, one swooped on at night as I was whistling in the yard :D. I got the plans off Google images. Am thinking of building an outdoor one too.
