Signalling and turning

    Hi,
I have my driving test next week but am confused about signalling and mirror checking when taking off. My instructor told me you must check every mirror and blind spot when turning left, right and pulling off from the pavement. It seems with the videos I'm watching to prepare myself that people don't look in the left mirror when pulling away from the pavement or turning right and don't check the right mirror when turning left. I'm worried about this as it seems that overchecking of mirrors when you should be watching the road is something you can be marked down for. Thanks!

In general, the full observation routine - think of it as a "full 360", beginning with the nearside blind-spot and cycling through the nearside mirror, centre mirror, offside mirror and ending with the offside blind-spot - is only necessary when moving off from parked. When turning or changing lanes to the left/right, start with the centre mirror and go to the mirror on the side to which you're turning, including the blind-spot check just before actually moving offline. Having said that, I personally think it's no harm to have a quick dekko in the opposite mirror first when changing course in busy conditions with lanes to the left/right.

Thank you! I thought so too but watching videos and from some friends' experience I've heard you can be done for spending too long looking in the mirrors and as a result taking your eyes off the road! Damned if you do damned if you don't!

And so you can. It's largely a matter of common-sense.
