Mobile Broadband Speeds

I have a Meteor Dongle and use it in the Blackwater Valley, Kerry.

Just noticed a dramatic jump in speeds -getting nearly 1.1MB/s (no typo) on 3G. Didn't even realise that was possible with 3G.

Have been looking out for speed improvements since fibre came to Kenmare, but 0.6MB/s up until today, and 0.3 last year.

    9Mb on 3G isn't even spectacular, goues up to 14 or 21Mb.

In Ballybofey where my workplace is at, the Meteor 3G network there often hits around 24Mbps in speed tests going by TestMy.

Maximum sustained speed I saw with tethering was 3MB/s (test Zip file placed on my blog) as per the TestMy test:

They recently upgraded their network there to 4G, so I decided to go with the €20 simplicity plan to check it out. While not a huge improvement over what I got on 3G, it's certainly faster than I've ever seen on Three 4G in the town (excluding its inflated Speedtest.net results):

This was a Leaseweb test file from here.

Okay, so this is the 'improved' 3G. Pity coverage is still spotty -still have to get in the car.

3G mobile internet is sold with a 'max' speed of 7.2Mb (with the exception of Three, which has invested in improved 3G technology and claims max speeds of 21Mb).

after reading this i decided to test it myself, normally i never connect to meteor internet the signal is usually so bad here.

very surprised and did a speedtest, got nearly 11meg down and 4 meg up.

puts my Eir DSL to shame at 8.24 download and 0.53 up.

edit. once I go outside i get nearly 15 meg down and 5 meg up. Real shame I cant take advantage of this while i wait for Eir FTTH, its over double what I get on DSL.

I've been looking for other effects of the fibre coming to Kenmare, and found nothing. SCC the wireless provider still has the same crummy speeds, although they claim improvements. I haven't come across a single business WIFI location with any improved speeds -has anyone signed up in Kenmare? Do they know it's more or less the same price?

It's disappointing as it could make the long wait for NBP bearable.

If you're currently an eir customer, you might be able to get an eir mobile package to suit you. eir mobile runs on the Meteor network AFAIK.

I don't suppose this is ever likely for Ireland?

EE pledges blanket 4G coverage of UK by tapping BT resources

EE will dip into the deep pockets of new owner BT as part of a drive to provide blanket 4G mobile internet across the UK, leaving rivals scrambling to catch up in terms of coverage.

The pledge on Monday to grow 4G coverage from 60 per cent of UK landmass to 95 per cent by 2020 will be part of a £1bn investment in network improvement. EE wants to extend its superfast mobile internet services beyond the reach of current 2G or 3G signals to eliminate so-called mobile “not spots”.

Mobile groups typically use population coverage targets — which can be much easier to achieve given the extent to which people live and work in towns or cities. However, EE aims to give customers access to mobile internet when travelling around the UK by providing complete geographic coverage.

More than 750 mobile sites will be built by EE, which is lobbying the government to make it easier to get access to sites and negotiate with land owners.

Progress is being made with government officials, according to those close to the talks.

They have 5x the population density, so no, probably not.
