Croatia 5 Nights - Hvar or Dubrovnik?

So as the title suggests - if you had 5 nights to spend in Croatia - would you spend them in Hvar or Dubrovnik?
Would there be any point splitting it into 3 nights in one of them & 2 in the other with so little time?
5 nights isn't a lot & we want to chill a bit so moving base might not be the best idea?
    Thanks

Spent a week in Dubrovnik last year and found it too long,Stayed in a resort around 3/4 km outside the old town(which you could see in a day)and without an excursion to Mostar in Bosnia&H i would have been a bit bored.Dubrovnik is a beautiful spot, the old town is fab. Especially if you're a Game of Thrones fan.The views from the cable car are stunning but theres not a lot of shopping options and not much else to do.3 days there would be more than enough.
Never been to Hvar so cant comment.

Hi gailimh, I've been to dubrovnik and hvar on the one holiday.. It's a pity your holiday isn't a few days more as 3/4 nights in both of Dubrovnik and Hvar would be ideal. Saying that you could easily do both in the 5 nights also.

Dubrovnik, once you're not going outside the city for day trips etc, could be done easily in 2/3 nights. The old town is simply beautiful but you will walk the walls in a few hours and a day or two wandering the streets and alleyways will ensure you see it all.

We got a bus up the coast and then the ferry out to Hvar. It's gorgeous - think it's known as the monte carlo of the adriatic! Again, a few days will see all there is to be seen. It's more a town for lying back and relaxing during the day with a healthy nightlife then after. It's well worth going on a boat trip out to the islands for a day (the same goes for Dubrovnik).

There are also ferry's that go between Dubrovnik and Hvar but they only go on certain days.

We were actually due to go to Trogir for 2 nights after spending 3 nights on Hvar but we loved Hvar so much we stayed on there instead. Let me know if you want to know any more.

We might be interested is a trip like that is September. Would it be suitable for over 55's.
Were you able to do a package or did you book it all yourselves. Any links would be helpful.

We booked it ourselves. Croatia is suitable for all ages to be honest. You can relax as much as you want or do as much activities as you want too. We flew with aer lingus.

    That sounds lovely.
5 nights is the most we can because of work unfortunately.
Maybe we could do 4 nights in Har & 1 in Dubrovnik.
Really just want to relax in the sun in Hvar.the missus would like to sunbathe :-)
There seems to be a lot of apartments on AirBnb.
For Dubrovnik what would be the best area to stay?

If you're only going to stay the one night in Dubrovnik then you should probably stay in the old city so you're close to everything.

I'd spend three days in Dubvronik. This way, you can visit the old city (which is very compact) and also Montenegro and Bosnia&Hertegovina (they are both very close). I wouldn't spend more than one day visiting Dubrovnik. It's an amazing city, but too small to spend there that long.

We are doing 5 days there too end of may. Staying first 3 nights in old town and not decided what to do last 2. Wed love to go to hvar for last 2 days but our flight back is at 10.30am so wed not make it back would we?

Was also thinking about lopud island for last 2 days but same story. Were at the mercy of a ferry to catch our flight and that could be a disaster... Any ideas?

Would it not make more sense to travel to Hvar for 2 nights first and then stay in Dubrovnik the last 3 nights?

Korcula is also another option if you want to go island hopping from Dubrovnik, lovely relaxed town with amazing seafood. I found it a bit of a relief after Dunbrovnik which can be packed during the day.

Would agree with this. You wouldn't make it back from Hvar so makes sense to do it the other way around. If you're not planning on doing day trips from Dubrovnik then I'd suggest you stay a third night in Hvar and just 2 in Dubrovnik.

However, as another poster mentioned above, there are some excellent day trips available from Dubroknik if this is what you fancy.
