    Article speculates on why they grew so tall. It says reproduction, which is valid for spore dispersal I suppose. However they may in my opinion used the sunlight to warm up or dry out the fruiting bodies, in order to shoot the possibly heavy and large spores out a good distance as the drying would give a spring loaded fire mechanism.
