    hi,
I am starting work over in Scotland in a month's time. I was thinking of bringing my irish car (irish registeration plates) over to Scotland (larne to stranaer by ferry and vice-versa). I will be coming home to Ireland every 2 weeks for the weekend. Just wondering will my irish driving licence by ok when driving in Scotland and will my irish insurance be ok in Scotland as well?

    thanks

Your Irish driving licence will be fine, the insurance is a different matter and you really need to read your policy document as some policies limit the total number of days you can be outside the country with the car in one policy year. There is also the issue that if you are taking the car outside Ireland to work on an ongoing basis that you probably need to inform the insurance company as you are effectively moving to the UK to work if you will be there for 12 days out of 14.

Think you'll be legally resident in Scotland in this case, which means your existing insurance will stay intact for up to 31 days (you need to check this) after which it will fall to the lowest legal limit in your new country, which is probably 3rd party.

We moved to Holland and this became an issue as 3rd party was not a runner for us and local companies would not insure us on Irish plates. Had to push through the whole process.

Should be simpler in the UK but think you'll need to officially export the car. Probably get a vrt rebate though.
