So iv recently started mountain biking and got a few mates involved too and safe to say we are hooked. Having done motocros and trials biking for many years i have taken to the mountain bike very easily. Im on a trek ex8 which wqs standard when i bought it and iv done a few upgrades which really improved it and my times on runs.

Living in naas im really close to wicklow so that would be our main playground but we have gone to bikepark a few times and will be travelling to there or rostrevor at least once a month of not more and iv been thinking of adding a dh bike to thw mix.

Some lads im talking to are saying im mad to get one because ill never use it so just looking for opinions from lads who have them on how they find them keeping in mind i will be keeping the all mountain bike too

If you like pushing a bike up a hill for 15mins to ride back down in 2mins then go for it! ;)

Otherwise you can hire one in places like BPI and Rossi

I have one, I use it in BPI mainly, and a couple of spots locally that I've made, TBH if it gets rolled out once a month it is a lot, I'd use it the most from november to feb, so this is a good time of year to be buying one, the evenings are getting longer so you'd feel more like doing longer spins where you pedal, not just struggle up a hill and bomb down it.

I find they work best on really steep surfaces, on just rolling descents they're not much fun, and more suited to a trail bike, most of my routes are down gulleys in forests, they're fairly fast and a little bit technical, but not something you'd want to do on a normal enduro bike.

If you have the disposable cash go for it, they're not impossible to pedal uphill, but it sure as hell isn't easy. Mine cost me a nice wedge of cash, and it just sits in my shed most of the time, but every time I use it I have great fun on it, and it seems worth every penny

My plan would be to use it in bpi and rostrevor where they have uplifts or places we can do our own uplift.

Might try get a lend of one and try it out a few times before i buy. Was thinking if i was to start doing a bit of racing dh would be my choice

In fairness to the trek it seems well able to take anything i point it down and with the upgrades its a very capable bike
