I bought a number of cartons of 5w30 oil in Halfords on special I've a mazda 2 and this was perfect oil for it. My wife has opel astra 1.6 petrol and 5w30 is the same oil. However the oil has ford recommended on outside does this matter?

Nah, it just meets a spec that Ford require.
Just make sure it meets the needs of the Astra and you'll be fine.

I've used that oil on loads of non ford cars. Ford just specify that certain engines need fully synth 5w30 that meets a certain spec that not all full synth 5w30 oils meet. It doesn't contain anything that would harm an engine that doesn't demand that spec as long as it meets the needs of the Opel engine that's all that matters.

What is of higher quality: apples or bananas? Both are food, right?

However with non-turbo petrols almost any oil will be OK. ACEA A5/B5 is good spec, but it is more focused on efficiency. A A3/B4 oil would be safer for the engine, as it has higher high shear rate.

There's fully-synthetic and fully-synthetic. Group III hydrocracked can be labeled full-synthetics everywhere except Germany, and Group IV PAO full-synthetics are higher quality again. As grogi says, select a decent A3/B4 in the correct viscosity and you'll be fine.
