I hope I put this in the right thread for anyone who has dealt with homeless.

I've a homeless man over the last week who stuck out to me. He's not looking for money off people, but trying to find work and won't take any money off me. He's been homeless in Dublin for a few weeks now. He's a British citizen and is only looking for work.

I told him I'd meet him at 10am on O'Connell street on Monday to get him registered for the dole so he get a room at least and start from there.

So am I right to for to register in the social welfare office on D'Olier street to get him registered and does he need any special documents?

OP, he might not be eligible for Social Welfare unless he has already worked in Ireland. But saying that, there's no harm in trying.

I used to work with homeless people in Ireland and, unless things have changed in the last 2 year, you can access emergency accommodation whever you are from. There is a Freephone number you can call if you are homeless and they will send you somewhere on a night by night basis and then sort you out with somewhere more permanent. The homeless person's Unit will also help with him looking for a somewhere and getting back on his feet again. I would google both of these if I was you.

Also from my experience, I don't mean to be pessimistic OP but often when people end up on the street, it's very complicated and are often very trouble. While I am not saying you shouldn't help him if you can, I would be careful not to get to emotionally invested here. There might be more to the story than you are aware.

Moved to State Benefits, which should be the more appropriate forum. Please note their charter.

So some guy with no money, job, preperation or planning, job interview or friends or family arrives in Ireland from the UK and wznts to sign up for free house , free accommodation & benefits. No wonder this country is bankrupt.
