    Email him/her?
    What for him/her to return?

Surely he has to inspect the ground and founds and rising walls anyway???

Don, I would answer if I knew.

Sadly you have isolated yourself from many posters with your posting style, e.g when you declared last week that wrapping the hollow core was pointless for Airtightness etc.

His engineer might be permanent on holidays, but surely if he has one appointed and they ate at this stage, then the drawings would be on site.

So, Don, what do the drawings stipulate?

Not everyone gets detailed construction drawings. I didn't. Probably should have as I know several errors were made.

And the point of mine is horses for courses. Not everyone hires all the professionals, rightly or wrongly.

If the guy has no engineer, so what, nothing to do with us. He has asked a simple question. Little point ridiculing him.

if someone purports to have a professional engaged, but asks the most basic questions on here because "my engineer is away" then it obviously looks as though they are using this site INSTEAD of engaging a professional

that deserves to be called out and exposed
using this site is NOT an alternative to hiring a professional i

if it walks like a duck......

the forum charter states: This board is intended for discussion of Construction & Planning issues, by fellow users, and as a place to openly exchange tips and advice for free i.e. no one must seek to gain personally, professionally or financially from their participation in the forum . It is not a consultancy service and it is strongly advised that you always appoint your own professional advisor(s).

It is quacking a little alright!!

In any case the OP should be able to figure it out from the links in the first reply.

When building with thermal blocks do I still have to do a twin leaf wall or can I just do the one leaf with the thermal blocks.

What thermal blocks ? (quinnlite, kilsaran etc ?)

and why are you building with thermal blocks?

the reason i ask is because usually the conversation and process to get to the decision to use thermal blocks..... should also have covered the need to build 1 or two leafs

thermal blocks give better insulation. I do see them used in eastern europe with just 1 leaf, I was wondering if the same can be done here in Ireland.
I was looking at the ytong blocks.

    I've found

    - you need dry-lining or EWI with the widest block to meet current regs.

    - you need details for all junctions by an experienced arch tech *

    - you need to send the builders on a training course, they need to interested and paid well *

    - window and door lintels need careful detailing by arch tech and engineer particularly DPC course *

    * because this is a relatively new construction in Ireland

Just to be clear - thermal blocks give a better insulating value than standard blocks.

They do not give a better insulation value than ... insulation!

If you put 200mm of insulation in a wall build (be it single or double leaf) the use of aerated blocks instead of normal blocks alongside the insulation will only provide a small extra benefit at a large extra cost!

IMO thermal blocks should be used in a limited sense for breaking cold-bridges and not in general as part of an insulation strategy.

you need to first discover what your target wall u value is... and then work back from that to discover what construction will reach that value.

in my experience a ytong single leaf wall wouldnt reach current values without supplementary insulation... and would be uneconomical to try to build them in a double leaf.
