Piston ring...

02 Astra 1.4 Petrol has been burning a bit of oil for a while. Old car and I put in a lot of mileage, so I wasn't too concerned, just kept and eye on it and topped it up.

Changed the oil and plugs today, No.3 cylinder plug was covered in oil, all others okay.

    I'm guessing it's a piston ring?

I'm in no position financially to get it done or a new jammer, so is there anything I can do to minimize the issue?

Not really, once rings go they go. I suppose you can do a proper fix DIY but first, can you do a compression test to confirm?

Are tou sure it isn't the valve cover gasket leaking oil down?

I might be able to get hold of an aircraft compression tester. I'll see if that fits in.

I'm not, how could I see if it is/isn't?

or a valve guide, only compression test will confirm worn rings.

Very unlikely to be valve cover gasket, that keeps the oil from escaping from the inside of the engine to the outside, and if it fails, there's oil everywhere on the outside of the block, but if it's burning oil, a much more likely suspect would be the valve stem oil seals, which could be letting oil pass down the valve guides.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

    Big job to replace?

Can you tell us where exactly was the oil from the picture below?

Was it on the white part with NGK written on it or was it only on the electode part on the right of the picture?

Electrode, suggesting the oil is in the cyclinder.

So there was no oil in the spark plug well before you removed the plug?

In that case it is probably a piston/ring issue as you said. There really isn't much you can do about it without rebuilding the engine, which is not really financially viable on a car of that age/value.

None in the well no. Thought as much. Thanks.
