I saw them at the ploughing a few years ago. Would be handy alright just not consistant enough phone signal here to be sure that it would work

I got one off done deal 2 weeks back.think it was €60.when I got the switch the instructions said it needed a 2g SIM card.showed the instructions in the Vodafone shop and they said they'd no 2g SIM card.its still in box.
Maybe someone on here can enlighten us.

They just meant that they don't have 2G ONLY SIM cards, it should work with any SIM you can pick up.

The same ones sold in UK say that they won't work with 3network in UK. But will work with all others.

I think they mean the device is only 2g capable, and 3 uk are a 3G network...

As long as you have 2g coverage in the shed you should be fine...

    Do 3 in Ireland support 2g ?

Have a fence on, last two years. I'm in a poor enough area for signal but have to say it's a bit useless at getting a signal I've even attached a second aerial and still no good. The phone would have 3 bars and fence on can't get signal.

Get the cheap one if it don't work you won't be too out of pocket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭st1979

Three most definitely have 2g. Since they took over O2 its all I can get.

I bought one of these two years ago

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Energenie-Remote-GSM-Controlled-Mains-Socket-White/dp/B007R1HNTG

Mine has worked perfect so far except for one mistake I made the first year. I didn't have it in use over the winter and when I started it up last spring it wasnt working. It turned out that the number of the gsm card on it had gone invalid due to being inactive for a couple of months. I think the same can happen with electric gates set up if you are using a phone on them. Anyway I was advised that every now and again you should remove the card and use it to make an outgoing call and that keeps the number active.

I find it a great help to be able to turn off the fence when down the fields rather than phoning the house, trying to explain to someone 'turn it off for two minutes and then turn it back on' etc etc

I'd have no hesitation in recommending it. When I bought it on Amazon it was on offer for a day or something and was around 60 stg at the time if I recall correctly.

Turns on and off your fencer by you ringing it. Very handy when you are fixing a fence. Just bought a new one on eBay for 20 euro delivered same as the last one I had. It did 2 years but was in a wet position

If it was the same as mine in op how long did it take to arrive?

Can't see your one but anything from China you want to wait about 3 weeks. It comes with a funny type 2 pin plug and you get a UK adaptor with it. It looks cheap but does the job.

Just going to ask the same question
    Was also wondering.
    Do you text on off
Can you check if the switch is on or off ?

You just ring it. If its on and you ring it will switch off and vice versa. Any sim will do that can get 2g which is all of them I think. Sim cost is generally free but you need a bit of credit so between 5 and ten euro total.
Mine cost less than €20 for the gsm switch socket and will probably cost a tenner for sim.

I bought one off farmstuff.eu (I think) for about €65 over the winter. Working fine since but did reset itself once so had to set it up with our phones again.

Few things that caused me bit of hassle setting up. Got Meteor card which works fine for 2G. However also need to remove pin code requirement from the SIM card before would work - this is easily done on a Meteor phone - which I hadn't got so had to go back to phone shop again and they did it for me. Also with the phone credit, bought €5 credit in shop - but again couldn't top up cos I didn't have Meteor phone to ring from. Ended up having to top up using credit card by ringing a Meteor number for gift top ups.

So it landed today and going to buy the sim anyone know which sim lasts longest between topups

I think most of them are 6 months. Stick a fiver on the sim and make a call from it every couple of months should do it.

Just call up the provider and pay using a debit card. Our house gates have this type of system

Was trying to get through to Eir last week (formally meteor) to do that to top up fencer switch. Kept cutting me off automatically saying technical issues after few minutes on phone. Doesn't look too promising for meteor customers if that's service Eir giving. Ended up topping up at ATM but had to give 10 as opposed to 5!!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sonoff-Remote-Control-Appliances-Network/dp/B072C4W6KH for anyone looking for a very good cheap gsm switch controller. Reasonable app with it also that gives you a button on your phone to switch it on and off and shows you the status of it etc.

Timmaay have you got one? It looks the business especially as the lads at the ploughing were looking for 160 +vat for theirs. Does it only work from the app or can you still ring it to turn off. My dad's phone doesn't support apps!

I haven't got that gsm yet, but have the WiFi version of it, have got on well with it, also have a temperature WiFi one that gives me a live readout of the milk bank tank. App works well, however no, you can't use it without a smartphone, for that I would go with one of the ebay/aliexpress ones for 20e that someone else mentioned earlier in this thread. I'll admit fully for your 160e your probably getting a much more reliable device with proper backup etc, the 20e straight from China yoke can be hit and miss and will probably take abit more effort to setup. Also does the 160e include the sim card and data package?

No he said you would have to go and get your own sim. It was called fenz-on

Cant find the blurb for mine.
First make sure sim is active by using it in a phone.

There was info or vids online which were easier than the info came with it
