Its not a car, but this seems the best forum.
    Iveco Daily 2.8 diesel.
How much play is acceptable in the timing belt? There seems to be maybe 15-20mm play on the longest stretch between pulleys. Is this OK?

Presumably you're referring to the ancillary fan belt rather than the timing belt

    No, the toothed timing belt.

So how much pressure are you applying to get the "play"?

A rule of thumb is a 1/4 turn on the longest run.
I don't know the spec for the 2.8 but that RoT has done me very well over the years.

Finger pressure. Its quite a long gap between pulleys here.

    Could you elaborate?

Using finger pressure you should be able to just get 1/4 of a turn on the belt twisting it in the middle of the longest run that the belt has between two pulleys.
More than 1/4 and its too loose, less than 1/4 its too tight.
