Sending Birth Cert for SW Application

    Hi,

My mother is in the process of filling out an application form for a SW payment, it says if you were born outside of Ireland, you must provide your birth cert. Does she send the actual birth cert or can she send a photocopy? If she sends the original will she get it back? She doesn't want her birth cert going missing because it took her long enough to get it from the UK.

She was previously getting a different SW payment, so they could have it on file already, if it makes any difference.

It's the original Cert they want, no photocopies, and yes they will send it back

She can always bring it into her local Intreo office. They'll photocopy the cert, and stamp the photocopy "Original Seen And Verified". Assuming the rest of the forms etc. are completed they can then post it on to the relevant section. Original cert stays with your mum.

I personally wouldn't leave an application form and associated documentation in our local SW office.
It's very busy down there and they don't really have time to do things that people can do perfectly well for themselves.

I think we'll get it seem and verified by our local Intreo!

    Thanks for the advice!

They do it all the time. On the spot. You walk in. Explain what you're applying for, ask them if everything is in order and explain that you don't like sending original passports / birth certs in the general post and could they verify a copy.
The air of not having time is dependant on the officer in question. If it is just a spot of photocopying and a doublecheck, then Friday is normally quiet in most offices. In reverse, if it's a complete appeal with ramifications going up to the High Court etc then Friday may not be optimal. Pick your moments.

They might do it in your local office , not in ours.

Granted. Dublin city centre - more staff, you get all kinds of everything and photocopying is a welcome break.
Discretional photocopying aside, there is a date stamp in every public Intreo office that states "Original Seen And Verified" with the DSP logo on board. It's there for a reason.
