Farnham Estate - receivership

The Farnham Estate in Cavan went into receivership during the week, and did so only a few days after them accepting a rather hefty deposit for our wedding reception from myself and my other half.

We heard the news on social media, rather than from the hotel itself. They hadn't contacted us at all, so I rang and emailed to see what the story is. I was told that it is business as usual, but I'm still waiting on actual confirmation in writing of this (promised twice, still nothing yet!)

They're good people there, and it isn't the staff's fault, but we're not happy with the lack of communication and the whole thing is about as welcome as a hole in the head to be honest!

Anyone else here in the same boat?

Thought that place was a Radisson?

Yes, it is indeed. Whether it will stay that way now, since receivership has been announced is unclear...various rumours circulating, and nothing official from the hotel as of yet!

The hotel we had our wedding in (not anywhere near the area) went into receivership 6 weeks before our wedding day! It was a huge shock because it's an extremely popular hotel in our town. But we spoke with the hotel management who assured us it was business as usual for the hotel, wedding in the hotel went off perfectly and a couple of years later the hotel came out of receivership. We are actually attending a wedding in our hotel this weekend!!

It can be a huge shock and upset to have such a large part of your wedding day threatened and out of your control. The hotel probably has had many other guests, functions and wedding parties on the phones and emails trying to find out what is going on. Try to keep calm but quietly figure out a back up plan just in case. when is your wedding?

Actually I know of a hotel which has been in receivership the last 4 years, it's a very busy hotel and you would never guess it was trading in receivership.

PS - that Farnham Hotel is gorgeous, stayed in it a few years ago, beautiful setting for a wedding.

Hey Sunny Dayz...thanks for the reply!

Our wedding isn't until Autumn next year, so we do have time to play with, if push comes to shove, but we really don't want to have to change unless absolutely necessary...we picked the Farnham because we love it, and would hate to move venues!

As soon as we put down the deposit, and on the strength of that date, we booked several other things, so hopefully it all doesn't go belly up.
Like yourself, I know of a few places that are in the same boat, and functioning as normal, so hopefully that will be the case here too.

What is annoying me a bit over the past few days, is not that it has gone into receivership (these things happen after all) but that it is us chasing them for information and assurances, rather than the other way around. They say that they're contacting everyone, and no doubt that is a big task, but whilst others I know have been spoken to already, we have not been kept in the loop at all. Nada.

I've been calm and understanding with them so far, but I'm afraid that hasn't gotten me anywhere. It's unfortunate, but it seems that I'll have to light a fire under somebody in order to be taken seriously it seems!

Receivership isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's gone to NAMA and is likely to be put up for sale.
I read an article on the Sunday Business Post about it and how business was currently strong.
With the hotel / services area in Ireland doing well, I can imagine it'll be a good purchase.

I just saw on another wedding site that the hotel had rang on of their wedding couples to give them a heads up.
I can understand you'd be a bit nervous as you didn't hear from them directly, but I don't think you've very much to worry about.

How did you pay the deposit?

As far as I'm aware, if you paid by Credit Card, your deposit could be covered by insurance should anything go wrong.

Yeah, we paid by card, so we've looked into that aspect of things, in case push comes to shove!
We got an email today, which has helped a bit. Whilst it doesn't address quite a few of the queries that I have put their way it is a start!
