Just a quick one, car went funny while on holiday, brought it too an english speaking garage and they poked around and then took it in,

got a call saying the alternator is ****ed and needs replacing. No problem with this, well apart from the fact I have no poxy car now halfway through a camping holiday but anyway....

They wanted 400 for a new alternator, I opted to source myself and got the exact match for 200 delivered to here But they want 160 labour claiming they have already soewnt 4 hours on it before even fitting the new one.

I was under the impression alternators were a simple enough job for a professional.

am I being give the tourist special or not factoring in the amount of time diagnosing the issue?

It really looks like the "Tourist special" alright! In the Trajet the alternator is removable in about 5 minutes. You would imagine that most alternator faults would be apparent with a quick multimeter test.
