    Hey everyone,

I applied for disability allowance over a month ago. What is the current wait period?

Does the allowance only last the amount of time your doctor ticked in the application? Eg. 12 - 24 months

It can take up to12 months to get a decision and the allowence lasts as long as your unfit to work

If you are stuck for income in the mean time, you can apply to your Community Welfare Officer for Supplementary Welfare Allowance.

My husband has to put in claim for disability allowance, and although we knew this would be a long process, I'm astonished that it could be as long as a year before his claim goes through! Does anyone else have any more info on this allowance, I'd be very interested to hear from you. Thanks.

    Hi there

Well just the length of time it may have taken other people to get a claim through.

I applied in March, got refused in July, appealed in July, appeal allowed letter received 9th Sept. It will be 2 to 3 weeks before it gets back to the deciding officer. Hopefully will have weekly payment by then but as I understand it, arrears take ages to get paid.

ETA My Illness Benefit is finished since last week and we don't qualify for SWA so hoping it comes through very soon.

Thank you all for replying to me. I instinctively knew it would be a long process, but at least when you know what other people in the same position have been through, within a certain time scale, then its easier to get my head around it and just take it as it comes and buckle down for the wait! Thanks.

Ah OK sorry I wasn't sure what you meant.

It seems to be quite normal for a claim to be refused the first time and have to be appealed which is why it can take up to 12 months for payment to start.

    Best of luck.
