Hello guys.need some advise here.basically looking to models from 2010 up to 2012 reg. max 25000.must be automatic.would prefer m sport but thats another 3-4 k. compare to se models.Another thing sellers. To buy privately(no warranty no comeback) cheaper to buy or buy from lets say bmw dealer with 2 years warranty but more expensive?of course there are non bmw dealers with shorter warranty and reasonable prices.so not sure which way to go?any known issues with these cars except that timming chain issue?all your opinions and advises are welcome.thanks in advance

    I'm in the same boat.

25k will land you a nice motor. The manuals are a good bit cheaper but the auto is a lovely drive. M-Sport as you say will be a strectch as they seem dearer.

UK is a good option at the moment as sterling is back toa semi decent rate if you are a competent buyer or have access to assistance from one.

Auto gearbox seems solid in them and timing chain which should be covered now by BMW is the only issue on them that I knwo off.
Are you fussy on colour / interior combination ?

I have a nov-11 msport auto and I love it.

I'd only buy auto and msport - I think the car in non-msport is very plain looking and the extras are really nice.

When I was buying 2nd hand via BMW network about half of them had the pro navigation system and I wouldn't buy one without it as otherwise the interior looks crap as there are 2 large plastic sheets either side of the smaller screen. Also the sat nat, DVD player, HD for music etc is handy.

I also have sun protection glass that looks really good.

After that it's down to preferences and what you value - xenons etc. The only extra I don't have that id love are electric folding mirrors.

Assume you're getting the 520d? 184bhp so plenty of power for everyday driving.

I'd buy private if has full service history and get valdas in motor confidence to check it.

Also they made some changes around Mar-11 whereby the front seat heating was standard but before then it wasn't so just be aware (think you know as next to auto box there are no buttons for comfort and sport)

    Best of luck!

About 3 months ago I sold my other half's 5 series it was a 2011 se
It had the m sport steering wheel and seats with pro nav

Full service history 6 months tax and about 18 months nct 96000km

It was originally a UK car

I sold it privately for 18500

Not sure if that is any help to give you an idea of pricing

Cheapest f10 on donedeal is 16k at the moment its a 2010 (apart from NI cars so go have a look at exchange rates and VRT costs. Don't take the rate from currency websites as a given either in reality you will not get that rate unless you are in a bank or know someone who is. Check rates with your bank and other banks first. No way would I buy the cheapest car for sale in the country but thats your starting point.

Cheapest sport is 21k and thats a 2011 but its a manual. I'd say you will use up your full 25k to get a good one but the prices are of course falling towards the end of the year 25k could get you a great one possibly with a bit of cash left over.

Best of luck, I am waiting for f10 sport prices to fall myself a bit before I change my trusty e39, just never warmed to the e60 but I have driven the f10 and like it very much indeed.

Definitely worth spending a few extra grand and get one with decent spec & one which has been well looked after.

Absolutely correct. F10 are not the worst offender as they are generally pretty nice but BMWs are very spec sensitive. E90 was a great example, get a basic spec with no extras, cloth seats, small wheels, 1.6D engine and it doesnt deserve a premium over the likes of a mondeo etc....but spec it up and get a nice interior/exterior combo and it can be a great looking and driving car.

A neighbour has a black f10 sport with most of the bells and whistles and its beautiful

My old 2011 F10 520d SE auto is still for sale in Keary's in Cork where I traded it last month for a 141 M Sport. I bought it off them 2 years previously. It's an original UK car but has higher spec on it than most Irish models. Has the Sport auto box, M Sport steering wheel with paddle shifts, adaptive xenon headlights with highbeam assist, sat nav, heated front & rear seats, power folding and auto dimming exterior mirrors plus 18" alloy wheels. Just under 90k miles with full BMW service history and never gave me any issues in the 2 years I owned it. They are asking just under 27k for it with the 2 year BMW warranty but realistically you should be able to buy it with your budget.

This is it when I owned it:

    The car was perfect
I advertised it for 20k and the first guy arrived had cash and I didn't want to keep the car

I've started looking also for a good F10 msport budget is 20 to 22K, most of the irish cars are bigger mileage for that money.

might also consider a nice F30 3 series m sport also, if the price is right.

my question is about which diesel engine to go for?

    520d , 525d or 530d (535d is propably out of price range)

while trying to compromise between road tax and engine power/noise

525d or 530d if you can find one

The 520 has the known chain problem

ill probably start looking in the UK towards the end of the year.
(that's if an irish car can't be found for the money)

probably use moneycorp to get money to uk fast

if anyone out there has a good F10/F30 msport car for sale ( or thinking of it b4 end of year)

    pm me.

The same can be said of the N57 engine in the 525d/530d. ;)

Not in anything like the same numbers though? I know more 20d were sold than 25/30d but the 6 cyl was much less likely to be affected than 4 cyl if I remember correctly?

What exactly is the problem with the chain, and how can you detect a potential problem when you're on a test drive?

    Start here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056828710

BMW now cover it (at last) so once it's been done you are all good.

Same engine family and similar design. It's a numbers game, more N47 engines on the road than N57 engines.
