Any idea why they are resurfacing parts of the N40 South Ring Road in Cork around the Douglas exits heading east? This was done very recently and didn't seem in need of it to me,

Good question OP. Travelling the road myself daily. Its only the top layer that is being resurfaced so i am assuming that maybe the wrong spec of tarmac was used?

    Seeing similar in Dublin also.
A large stretch of a main road going into Dublin City was resurfaced recently. I cycle the road regularly and the road was in excellent condition. I do not understand why it was resurfaced again when it was only resurfaced a few years ago.

Some of the local 'main' roads feeding on to it are in dire need of repair or resurface yet they have been ignored. I have repeatedly ask the DCC and Fingal to repair these local roads yet the response is always the same. "Someone will look at it", "There's no funding available"

I might add that most of the recent damage to the local roads appears to have been caused by Irish Water. Either the roads have been left unfinished after their works, or the resurface work is p*ss poor and already breaking up badly.

It's one of the most heavily trafficed stretches of road in Ireland. It's good to see the TII (NRA) are doing preventative maintenance.

This kind of infrastructure needs to be kept in good condition or it falls apart.

It's possibly a spec issue being repaired under warranty eg drainage not fast enough etc etc

There's a huge issue at then moment on the N25 exit into Little Island too. It's absolutely worn out and it's not that long since it was redone.

On the street damage by utilities:

There's a major problem with some of the repairs done by utilities in general. I'm constantly seeing bad damage to surfaces and even expensive pavement destroyed by utilities cutting it and not restoring it with appropriate materials.

I'm sure they'd be furious if Cork City Council dug up their reception and filled it in with tarmac. Effectively that is what they do to our streets all the time!

Needs to be law about this. It's commercial companies dumping costs on cash strapped local authorities and ultimately the tax paying public as they have to be repaired.

Agreed on the N25 exit into Little Island , Its in a very poor condition.

Also Agreed on finish of repair works performed by utilities, once dug up this areas are real weak points due to poor spec tar, poor sealing and incorrect prework prerformed under the finished surface leads to subsidance.

I feel though with the section of the N40, there is more to it that preventative maintenance, especially considering the work that was performed 12/18 months especially consider the volume of work performed at the time.

That's true, there's some atrocious reinstatement around the place, you'd wonder who signed off on it. Not sure if that's the case on the N40 though, to my untrained eye it seemed fine.

Well where expensive paving is torn up and replaced with tar or concrete it's close enough to damage to public property.

At the end of the day they're doing it on the cheap to aid their profit margin. We ultimately end up paying to repair the bad reinstatement and have to look at ugly repairs for years in some cases.

Apparently there are issues nationwide with the quality of HRA being put down

Is there much HRA still being laid. I see its used on the N20 overlay south of mallow.
The thin layer of cl942 may not be standing up to high stresses. Also if the tack cost fails it is very prone to slip.

I think the N20 is due to get a TSCS yet

The surface between Douglas East bridge and Bloomfield was poor quality - pavement had started ravelling only a few months after it was completed. They had to carry out a good few patch repairs already. Crazy time to do it originally Oct/Nov 2014 midnight to 6am - just too cold. They could have at least laid the top layer directly on a warm layer below. Annoyed me every time I drove past it.

Sometimes these fixes are temp. To allow settlement for a few weeks before final fix...
