    No surprise at all, I've been saying this all along. Virgin has excellent speeds and most people (myself) included are having no issues with Netflix on Virgin.

    That isn't saying some people aren't having issues, but I honestly believe that it is limited to a very small percentage of customers.

    People always need to be careful about reading too much into complaints they read online, remember that it is usually only people who are having issues who bother to write. All the people who have no issues, rarely bother to post. So you can get a distorted view of how serious an issue is.

    BT Ireland is likely Sky.
    Speeds there would be improving due to more VDSL (fibre to cabinet) service as Sky were very late to that party.

    That was for the previous months rankings. When the problem they had was eventually resolved it's back to being as it used to be.

    They did nothing of the sort. Their peering was saturated, they arrange for a significant peering augment and that was that.

    It's odd then that their parent company was talking about Netflix and their rather anti net neutrality stance on heavy bandwidth services

    Have UPC IP addresses changed to virgin media hostnames yet?

    Eir ips is still resolving to eircom.net hostnames

    Also the company is still eircom ltd which is based in a small office in Jersey with a huge branch in Ireland....

    "eir and open eir are trading names of eircom Limited, Registered as a Branch in Ireland Number 907674, Incorporated in Jersey Number 116389. Branch Address: 1 Heuston South Quarter, St. John's Road, Dublin 8, Ireland."

    BT are their wholesale provider for core and access at some LLU exchanges.

    BT IRL manage the whole thing for them as a turnkey project pretty much with access to FTTC done via OpenEir back into BT routers to pick up data at major nodes.

    The network would be built and managed as per Sky's spec though. I'm just surprised that Netflix isn't picking up the Sky tag in the IP addresses.

    It's not quite white label reselling.

    You could actually have multiple different specs of service and different backhaul arrangements on BT Ireland for different client ISPs. It's very much a case of them getting what they pay for in terms of capacity and onward connectivity

    The vast majority of them don't resolve to anything at all as they haven't bothered creating the DNS entries, but there's a few *.ntlworld.* entries for some of the older IP ranges they used in the past.

    Their IPv6 addresses are resolving to eir.ie but IPv4 are still eircom.net.

    VM's 89.10x IPs still resolve to ntlworld.ie and their 80.111 block is upc.ie if I recall. Not sure about the rest of them.

    I would be very iffy about the surveys that attempt to locate speeds for various Irish towns and cities too.
    A hell of a lot of ISPs will come up as "Dublin" regardless of where the customer is located.

    Yes and no. :) Eir IPs can be traced down to the exchange level.

    Pinging 86-44-85-1-dynamic.agg2.clt.blp-srl.eircom.net [86.44.85.1] with 32 bytes of data:

    Pinging pool-ipv6-pd.agg2.clt.blp-srl.eir.ie [2001:bb6:7000:600::1] with 32 bytes of data:


    In these two cases, CLT is the Clontarf exchange.

    Yeah, Eir is the major exception. It really gives away almost too much info. I know ours comes up as WRD.something.CHF which is Wellington Road and Churchfield exchanges in Cork.

    A lot of the Irish ISPs don't locate at all.

    I did just that! I was experiencing poor Netflix performance so jumped ship. No regrets so far.

    I absolutely understand moving if you're own experience is poor. Maybe PR's was poor and now it's grand again?

    I just got the impression some people were moving purely because they we're scoring very well. I never had an issue with Netflix on VM personally. I only moved as I got a better deal and I could wait 15 more seconds for dirty movies to download off Newsgroups. :pac:

    Fair question. The alternative though is to stick with what you have as the alternative might be worse.
