    GF's car failed.

Rubber gaiter over steering link split. Item 43 ? NCT manual.

Her garage will fix it and redo the tracking. Retest job with NCT as a lane / equipment required.

Everything else passed. Will the retest be confined to checking the new gaiter and the tracking or can they recheck any item already passed ?

I think that's a visual retest on the ramp so that's all they'll look at. I had the same issue with my last car and that's all they looked at on the retest.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

They will only retest the failed item(s) unless something really obviously broken have appeared.

It's exactly as biko said OP. But even though it is only a visual it needs to go up on the ramp to inspect it, hence the retest charge.

If the tracking is done then they might do the side slip alignment test aswell just to make sure the wheels are not out of spec (the +- 10m/km front axle) on the test report.

    Thanks for the replies.

Saw her car and the NCT report this afternoon.

The very end piece of the gaiter has broken where it is clipped on to the linkage. Garage will repair it for about €150 to include part and labour. Apparently the link arm has to be opened up to replace the gaiter and then the tracking has to be realigned after that.

Because the repair work required would disturb the tracking NCT said that that there was no point in testing the first item (side slip) before repair. Shows as N/D - not done. Pity, everything else was perfect

I wish some bright engineer could invent a gaiter / boot that could be zipped or folded in to place to replace a split one !!!

    Cut one and glue it.

    You mean:

Personally, I would do the right job once. I wouldn't advocate cutting corners on steering mechanisms.

    I agree.

€150 to repair this is robbery btw. Steering rack gaiter costs less than €15. An hours labour at most.

Follow up. The part cost €25 from Toyota Ireland. The final cost of the entire job including realignment was just under €100 and it passed !
