Cross Bike Fit Versus Road Bike

    I've been dipping in and out of looking at various cross bikes for a while, for no real reason, they just interest me and I was wondering...

    How does a road bike fit cross over to a CX bike? Obviously different handling and what not but I have been left with the distinct impression that at the "rear" nothing changes, saddle height/position (in general) but at the front the "stack" increases a bit.

    I don't know all brands but having a Canyon and comparing my racey type one to the CX version the top bar is slightly longer(possibly due to the change in angle at the front and the reach is more or less the same but the stack has a 20mm increase.

    Is that basically the standard change, less ass up & head down and more "head/body up" due to the fact you are off road?

    Is that mainly it?

    Anyone compared a road & CX bike in their Brand before?

    Frame tends to have more ground clearance so your first time stopping will surprise you as you have to tilt to the side a bit more to get the toe down. Not sure if that's true with all CX but is with mine.

    Chainstays on a CX bike are usually longer.

    I moved from a road bike (ageing low end Ridley) to a cross bike (Rose Cross Pro DX) last year as I mix in roads and trails when I get the chance. Cross bike is comfier, probably due to running 32 tyres over 25, but the old road bike feels slightly more agile cornering on descents. Could also be due to moving from a 54 with 130mm stem to a 56 with 110mm. I love the CX bike for the versatility it provides in terms of variety ride options, particularly in Winter when I had studs on, but I reckon the next bike will be a road bike for the days I know I'll be staying on the road.

    My cross bike and road bike are the same brand - cross bike has longer chainstays, both feel surprisingly similar on the road.

    CAADX. The Cannondale frames are known to fit 'big' as well.
