Dry flaky skin

I have a very embarrassing problem lately. I have dry skin on my face. It happens during the day, then go the bathroom and see it in the mirror. I don't know what to do or use. I have been using E45 and a small bottle in my pocket but the next time I go to the bathroom, its back again.

I'm sick of it. Vaseline is meant to be good but will i have a greasy, oily look all day. Is it acceptable to use vaseline as a face moisturiser? Or is there something else to use.

You should start exfoliating your skin each night/morning before you put moisturiser on. It's dead, dry skin cells that show up as flaky skin, remove those each day and your problem will lessen considerably.
Otherwise you're only using a short term solution by wetting the flaky skin down so it can't be seen.

I have the exact same thing and it can be a nightmare, the best face cream I have to date was one I got in Aldi recently enough- grape therapy day cream. It absorbed really quickly into my skin and left no residual greasiness.

Thanks for this. I now need a quick exfoliator by the morning. What's the best home made exfoliator or is a shop bought one better?

No problem. I'm not much use with exfoliating products though I'm afraid. I have sensitive skin so mainly just use warm/hot water and a facecloth. Found that the shop bought ones made my skin even drier, unless I lashed on a heap of moisturiser. Homemade ones never really worked for me either, found them a bit rich for my skin too  Trial and error in other words!
I'm sure loads of other people can give good suggestions though. :)

Could it be caused by something you use on your face? As a teen I used a face wash which would cause my skin to dry badly but I swapped to one for sensitive skin and it went away in a few days.

I don't think so because it came out of nowhere and I've been using the same things. But then i bought a new cleanser thinking it might help, as in washing the flaky bits off, but i think it's making it worse.

Baking soda mixed with honey, or even with your normal cleanser is a good gentle exfoliator.

    Work from the inside out.
Do you drink plenty of water to hydrate your body?

I drink plenty of water, about a 1.5 litres a day. Probably not enough.

I was given prescription nizoral shampoo from the doctor before, so i'll try over the counter nizoral again and see if it works.

Just needed a quick solution that might help ease things during the night.

Sudocrem is great. I've had a patch of dry skin in that triangle between my eyes and tried exfoliating and a couple of different moisturisers, no success. Sudocrem on it two nights and it's fixed!

Brown sugar is a great natural exfoliator, just barely wet some sugar in the palm of your hand and massage it in to your skin then rinse off with warm water. Voila.

I went through a stage at age 12/13 where my chin was so dry it looked like I had a white goatee. I still think it was an infection of some kind as there were actual ridges on my chin and vaseline would mask it for maybe half an hour. I've never forgotten that time.

Hope it clears up soon :)

Thanks guys. Baking soda works as an exfoliator. Also used emulsifing ointment as a moisturiser and it seemed to have worked.

If you have a good skin regime and moisturize & hydrate yourself yet have dry skin it could be an allergy. A lot of people have become sensitive to the chemicals mentioned in these links, myself included. Have a google of the name to find out more about it.

After having glowing skin for most of my life I then had awful skin for a long time and didn't know why as I had an even better skincare routine than ever. Turns out this chemical was in my cleanser, moisturiser, fabric softener and shampoo. Since changing to other products my skin is much healthier, less inflamed, dry and roscea like.

Have a look at MooGoo products. My husband has dry patches on his face and these products help hugely.

you should probably go to your GP with this. this is very common in ireland its to do with our genetics ( my gp referred to it as the curse of the celts!!)
he may prescribe you a steroid cream , use it for a few days and it should clear it right up.

What's your diet like op? I had the same problem around the nose. I've cut down on my sugar and beer intake and it has helped

You're the second person to mention that. A family member swears by that for their newborn.

With regards to how much water to drink. Download an app called Water Drink Reminder (or any similar one). You enter in your weight, age, and other details (can't remember 100% what they are) and it tells you how much you should be drinking.

Ditto. Went to my gp and she said it was due to too much yeast. I cut down on bread beer mushrooms and cheese. She also recommended t-gel shampoo and kerium cream. Mine used to flare up after a night out due to the yeast in beer.

My hubby had a large angry patch of eczema and coconut oil cleared it right up. He uses a MooGoo shampoo and face wash and his dry skin is much better.

I use Capasal Herbal Shampoo for my scalp psoriasis and find it better than T-Gel and it smells much nicer too!

It could be perioral dermatitis, I've had it. It is actually caused (in some cases) by using steroid creams on your face, never ever use a steroid cream on your face!

Aveeno is a good, cheap, non-irritating moisturizer, and the moogoo stuff is great too. Dead sea spa magic skin softener is another good safe product. But if it is PD, you actually need to stop using too much stuff on your face to let it get better. PD usually is flakes around the mouth area, also red bumps. But if it's just normal dry skin it will be easier to get rid of.

The Pagano diet for psoriasis is what I use to keep my super dry, super sensitive skin under control. Alcohol, fried foods, cake/sugary stuff and stress !ake my skin break out.

Thanks for the suggestion of moogoo. I picked up some yesterday because the emulsifying ointment i got on friday was too greasy. Its brilliant on non working days anyway. I hope it lasts tomorrow.

Just wanted to come back after 3 weeks and update this, in case anyone finds that they have dry skin which can get very embarrassing. I have been using moo goo which has worked. I keep a small bit in a small bottle and have it in my pocket, just in case. I forgot this earlier in the week and i didn't need it at all. The bit i applied in the morning lasted all day. It is an expensive bottle to buy but worth it. The dry skin was so embarrassing, i would have done anything and paid anything to get rid of it.
