Is there a knack to it? Currently all I have to show for my efforts is a set of dirty hands.

An old trick that works for me is to use a hairdryer to soften em up a bit.just don't leave it on the one spot for too long.once the first part lifts the rest should come easy, good luck

I found that swearing and sweating is a good combination! Seriously I have been told that practising it is a good way to learn it, so I have taken that advice, when mrs bloggise is watching "her" programmes, I head out to the kitchen turn on the radio to off the ball and swear my my through the process, besides, if you get a puncture while out on the road, it will stand to you.

roll the tires over the rim pushing up with the hard part of your palm (the top with of your palm with the harder skin under each digit) . your toughened skin on your palms doesn't get tired like fingers do or sore. roll the rubber up and over the rim-wall moving around the circumference of the rim - one half of your tyre is on and the other awaits your tube.

if you're really having trouble moving the tyre over the rim wall, try a tiny bit of olive oil on the area at top of rim wall.

same thing then with the tyre and tube, just be careful not to pinch the tube.

liquid soap is better, as it's water soluble and will not lubricate your braking surface...
