Unusual alright and not a legal license plate!

It's missing the 1 according to Cartell! How long before the Gardaí pull it over I wonder?

Looks like they got a new plate pressed, minus the 1 after the 14. Add the one into a number plate checker, and you get that car. BMW X5, Black.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,903 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

    It should say 141 - D - 2134

so it's not a valid plate

edit.. I was way too slow

But why? Hardly for the toll bridge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,903 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

What would happen with a reg like that for a gosafe fine? Would someone manually check to see whether it should have been 141 or 142 and send it out or what?

I would imagine if it went to court the judge would throw out the fine do you think?

Either genuine mistake, avoidance, or a prestige thing. Either way, not a legal plate.

Could you be stopped for false number plates?

Interested to know if front plates are the same.

The 2 before the 1 makes my OCD flip out I have to say.

If it is an attempt to circumvent ANPR or tolls, it's a poor one. Nearly all of them in Ireland rely on the front plate, as opposed to the US where the rear plate is the targeted one. The rear plate in Ireland is usually not scanned and if it is, it's at a lower resolution in the event the front can't be read (M50 for example)

Of course. That plate is as legal as no plate.

True but I'm sure they'll get done for it very quickly.

It's up to the driver of the car to make sure his/her car is road legal though.

Ha, funny. I was just thinking to myself the other day, I wonder would it be possible to get a proper number plate again - not this 141/142 crap....

Nope SIMI successfully lobbied to get the dual number system and it's here to stay, unless another lobby group comes along with a viable alternative and the money/contacts to push it through.

What number did you use for the insurance disc? What number did you use for the tax disc? Fine, prison or both.

It was such a moronic move though. We had a perfectly logical, easy to read system and they just had to mess with it.. and no I don't think going to a random sequence (before someone throws that in) would be better :)

Yep. I think the above registration with just 14 looks way nicer and more natural. The 1X1/1X2 thing just doesn't work.

Apart from the seasonal sales problems apparently part of their logic was people would be put of by the unlucky number "13" and car sales would drpp as a result and so the 131/132 option would keep those superstitious people happy!

Fiddling with number plates seem very popular in Ireland.
Most likely because there's hardly any consequences. You can always put legal plates for NCT, and chances of Garda fining you for incorrect number plate and slim to none.

Having altered plate like smaller font, or other country code, or different colour are bad enough, but having number altered is another level of this...
Any fiddling with number plate might look like unimportant detail for most, but when someone commits crime with the car, and runs away, a proper, legal, easy to read plate is cruicial.

That's why in most countries in the EU, number plate is an official document issued by vehicle registration authority, has security measures so it can be checkes if it's not forged, and penalties for altering the plate in anyway are very severe.

If Garda started fining anyone who drives with illegal plate something like €1000 per offence, then problem would disappear.

No, it's not like the owner went over to some fashion plate. They actually changed their reg number.
Judge would not think that was funny.
