    A question for ye!

Could chain oil, as distinct from chainsaw oil be used as bar oil, or is it too light?
Left with 40l of chain oil by mistake. Won't be back for another 6-8 weeks with another!
Saw currently using 1 for 1 with proper oil,ie,fill of petrol, fill of oil

    Not sure what you mean.

There are 2 oils used with a chainsaw, one is an oil lubricant for the bar and the other is the 2 stroke oil mixed into the petrol. They arn't interchangeable.

There are oils available for open chain drive systems (on balers and the like, for example):

Perhaps this is what the OP has had delivered instead of chainsaw bar oil?

That said, the blurb for this type of oil talks about it being suitable for 'chain bars', being 'non-drip' and having 'non-fling' properties.
It'd probably be fine for use on a chainsaw, but I'd keep a close eye on consumption for the first few fills in case it runs out sooner that the fuel.

    Spot on,Meloden, !
Chain oil instead of chainsaw oil!
Tried it today, but oil ran dry and chain tightened, before the fuel was about 70 -80% gone, so I think chain oil for chains, bar oil for saws, went to Co-op for 5l of 'proper' stuff

Using "1 for 1" is a pretty high rate of useage. Any saw I had was usually set to use a tank of bar oil for every two tanks of petrol.

I use vegi chain oil at the rate of just less than 1 tank to a tank of aspen fuel mix. I have saved up used vegi cooking oil (filtered) from the fryer to try out as soon as I run out of the vegi chain oil and see how that goes.
