Finding Star Ratings

    Hi Guys.

I'm not part of the new beef scheme and know little about it, only that it's star ratings that count and here has to be 4 stars at some future date.

I have some heifers to sell later on this year. I bought them last year, nice angus and herefords out of BF. Star ratings would probably make them more valuable and i would rather sell them as breeding stock, if feasible. Is there any way to check their ratings. My father is in the scheme alright. Is there a way to run the cards through to check star rating using my father's account, or anyway to find star rating out another way.

    Thanks a million.

    ring icbf

you'll need to give them the DAM tag number and the sire bull code if from AI or the stock bull tag number

ring back 2 - 3 days later and they should be able to tell you then what star rating and index value they are

Guys, it's a long time since I registered a calf, as i don't have cows, but would one not have to input the number of the bull or the ai code when registering.

The whole star rating thing seems very convoluted. Would seem odd to have to contact vendor as bull doesn't show on the card. Would not make sense to have to contact vendor to get the number.

The best thing is to contact ICBF and see if they can help you. The breeder of the calf has to put down the sire of the calf when registering it but some farmers will put down any bull.
I've heard that some farmers who know they will be selling the heifers are putting down the sire as a top Ai maternal bull to give the heifers good star ratings. Of course this will show up if the heifer is genotyped.

Lads, I have a cow here with no sire listed and therefore no start rating. I know that her mother was AI'd by my father but of course no record of what bull was used was ever recorded. She's young enough - only just over 4 years old. She was selected for genotyping so i was wondering if the results of the genotyping would go as far as to confirm the sire and as a consequence she would get a star rating of some sort?

Yeah, if the cow is off an AI bull the genotyping will confirm which bull she's off and she'll get a star rating then.

Thanks lads. Yes that's my concern. Last thing that I want to do is make a false declaration regarding stars. I'm sure fellows are playing the system and also a few mistakenly registered wrong bull. Best not to mention them at all, but I might buzz the crowd when I get a chance to see what the Craic is. Just seems like a mad system really.
