We've been working to try to build up our business and are expanding into parts sales. We have up to now used one of the portable terminals that will accept credit card payments if we are at shows, we use this alongside an app on a smartphone. We now need to be able to take credit card payments by phone and I am finding the options very confusing and most seem to be very costly. We have been told we will need to set up a merchant bank account and there are one off fees and monthly fees etc.... Is there any easier way to do this?

Stripe will allow you to take credit card payments directly on your website without the need for a merchant account. You can also accept payments over the phone but you need to take responsibility for data security and compliance with PCI regulations. See link below

We used to use Realex payments.
We could integrate it into clients websites for online payment and we could use an online portal to accept credit card payments.

They are also based in Dublin with good support.

thanks tatranska, we have been in contact with Realex but they require us to set up an account with a merchant bank, it all seems quite a lot of hassle at this start up point when we don't know how much we're going to be using phone payments. I am really looking to keep initial costs down at this stage.

Stripe definitely worth looking at that's what we use its a virtual terminal no upfront costs just per transaction charge. It's quick to get going it's worth having even if it's just as a back up.
