The locals would never reveal our secret beaches, once you are in the realm for 10 years, you get to see the riches ;)

Bertra, Old Head, Carrownisky, Silver Strand are all good.

    Agreed.

Also Lecanvey( just past village), Carrowmore ( just outside Louisburgh )
And south of Louisburgh - Doughmakeown - and at end of road Tullabaun

and on North side of Clew Bay
    Mulranny

plus a great beach at the old Golf Links about a mile E. of Mulranny beach.

Can walk onto it from new golf course. Could also drive onto it from side road past the graveyard down to near estuary of Bunnahowna river. then over sand onto old GC For that you need to know where you are going. Always remember that the tidal range on West coast can be up to five metres, and that the going on sand can change from tide to tide.

What are you looking for to do there?

Walking, swimning, sun tanning, surfing, windsurfing, snorkling, etc...
For each purpose, different beach might be suitable.

Mostly walking and possibly sitting in the sun (if it shines!).

Then Bertra is going to be good, as well as Oldhead - more sheltered from wind.

    Many fine beaches.

For small kids, shelter and amenities recommend Oldhead

    For wind surfing etc Carrowniskey

You forgot to mention the midges:D. The buggers are a scourge in quiet weather.

There's a few hotels with pools in Westport... :)

Oldhead for me if I was forced into the water.
