That's exactly what it is supposed to do. The boiler shuts down when the room temperature reaches the temperature set on the thermostat. If it did not, you would waste a lot of gas overheating the house. Just set the thermostat at a temperature you find comfortable and let the heating controls keep it there. The boiler will come back on when the room cools down a degree or two.

The thermostat may be faulty, if you set it at say 22 degrees C it should switch on at 21 and off at 22 approximately.

Just wondering if the boiler stat may also be shutting down the circ pump which is controlled by the room stat, this would mean a very long heat up time but could account for the cold rads?.

It might be worth having the room stat replaced as they can stick, if it's always done this then the position and wiring of the room stat should be looked as both these things can cause problems when trying to get the house temperture right.

You need to find a good local RGI who does his/her own wiring or one who has a tame electrician on hand they'll be able to replace the stat and confirm correct positioning and wiring.

Have a look at the RGI website for local Rgis or pop in to your local heating merchants as they tend to know which local guys are good.
