My job has changed and I now need to get my own car after having a company car for 15 years. I'm looking down the long term rental route. I do a lot of miles so would be looking to hire for at least a year at a time. Passat size car. Anyone have any ideas of where I will get the best price? Just spoke with Enterprise there and they are charging €912 per month including insurance. Would that be average?

Why do you want to rent for a year at a time? No rental company will give a good deal as that means that they will loose money. PCP would be ideal for you.

    Edit /
Missed the lot of miles PCP won't work.

Is there any particular reason you can't just buy a car?

Dont have the money upfront to buy a new car so was hoping I could get a lease type agreement as company are giving me €450 per month to get my own car. Also as its a new work venture I don't want to be left with a car if it doesn't work out as I'm a rep and if I got another job chances are I will get a company car

Also I'm 7 mths pregnant so when I'm looking for a loan I'll have no pay packet for 6 months so chances are I wouldn't get a loan anyway. Doing my homework now before baby arrives and I need the car for January

From a previous thread I remember there being some condition where the maximum you could rent a car was something like 30 days after which you would have to return to the rental company and then begin another term, a formality.

Try NORTHGATE , they are very keen on long term van rental and do cars also.

One of my customers ended up with a car for a month from - http://www.carsondemand.ie/1-3-6-month-short-term-leasing because they didn't go through the correct channels.

I was in a similar position, handed back company car when I went on assignment abroad. Since I came back I have only rented cars. Forget long term rental, if you can, go short term ( 3 weeks or so at a time)

In general- shopping around will give you a car (focus/golf type) typically for around €400/month. Get a yearly excess insurance and Bob is your uncle. No worrying about depreciation or going over your agreed mileage in a PCP solution. I do about 3000 kms a month and that would kill you with a new car or restricted mileage.

In winter you sometimes get away with €300 and in summer (August) you may find your self having to hire a smaller car for a few weeks as the prices go up.

I have done the maths and for me, it was far cheaper than getting a company car or buying a new car. I am very happy and would recommend it.

My advantage is that it is no hassle to go to Dub airport and change when needed, and as I am traveling almost every month for a few days, it also means I never have to pay airport parking as I work around my car hire dates and simply hand it in when I fly and take out a new one when I land.

Sweet spot is rental of anything between 17 and 24 days I find, book roughly 3 weeks in advance each time , and only use brokers, they are always the cheapest. I have had cars from every rental firm in Dub airport and there really isn't much between them in terms of service or cars. Having said that, I have never used Thrifty, as I know they just use the old cars (131-132) from Hertz.
And sometimes you will find that you pay less for a 22 day rental than a 17 day rental, you pay less when you pick up the car a few hours earlier and so on, it is a bit of a lottery, and takes a bit of time to get your head around, but it is fun as well , knowing you started off with a €400 quote and in the end you get the same car for €300.

    Good luck hunting
