Android phone with decent camera

    Hey all,

I'm looking for a phone for my dad, in his 60s.

He LOVES taking photos of the grandkids and showing them to people, but the phone he has has something dodgy going on with the SD card slot.

It would have a secondary use as a back-up phone for him to take on holidays. He has an everyday use phone from his job, but it's locked down and he can't access cloud based back up services like Dropbox and Google, and because of the situation with the second phone SD card he lost some photos recently and was very upset about that.

He goes away about four times a year, but the main use for this phone will be as a camera and cloud back-up. He has no need for any other Apps, but we'll likely install WhatsApp for him so he can receive other photos from us.

Budget is about 120-150, online ordering is fine. Doesn't need dual sim, but SD support is necessary.

If he wants it mainly for pictures would a good digital camera not be better?

You don't say what network he is on but the Motorola Motor G 3rd Gen has a very good camera but is E179.99.
As far as I'm aware it has the best camera in the "budget android" category.

yes but the need for a back up phone is real, his job doesn't allow roaming on the work-issue phone.

Also, knowing my dad, he would feel uncomfortable taking out a camera and not a phone to take "casual snaps" of the kids.

    Your budget is fairly limiting.
I'd recommend (as always) the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6.
Buy one for £99 from Amazon and then pay ~€5 on eBay to get an unlock code so it can be used on any network.

    Or as above the Moto.

Android sub but would you consider an older Lumia? Their one selling point is some really well rounded cameras.

Strong vote against the Moto G. I had one, my GF had one and a colleague had one. All were utter muck. Very unreliable phones.

Get a oneplusone second hand on adverts.ie - You'll get one from a reputable seller for about 150 quid. Absolutely superb value for money

Strong votes here for the Moto G.
We are on the 4th one in this house. All have been great. One even lasted a spin in the washing machine in a pocket and still working. Teen daughter has had 2. Mother has one now and 70 year old uncle could even get his head around it and liked it.
Almost stock Android, sturdy, decent cameras and good price all win my vote.

Check out the Wileyfox Swift. £125 sterling on amazon. Free delivery to Ireland.

13mp camera. Possibly not as good as Moto G's, but a good bit cheaper for very similar specs.

(I don't have one myself. I'm making a similar decision between the two)
