Family car in Jeep style

    Hi all,

I despair when I see all the requests on here for cheap tax.... But....

Currently paying 1080 per year and happy to do so as I'd rather pick the car because I like it rather than pick a car based on tax..

That said, considering moving to something like an xc90/ q7 / ml / x5 / range rover.

I notice they all seem to be 1200 per year tax on a post 08 basis. Is that correct? I know paying thousands more for cheap 08 tax v a cheap 07 car doesn't make sense, but I'm probably looking at a 2010 or later model and keeping for a few years. Are there any decent sized 4x4 motors post 2008 that are less than a 1200 a year to tax?? I can't afford big money for a nearly new car, would be looking to spend 20/25 k . I don't know what my limit for tax is, but I guess under a grand a year would be nice for a change.

Thanks for any tips anyone might have.

Stuff like the Lexus RX Hybrid can have very low tax.

Thanks for that but looking for a much bigger and higher seating position car. I actually had a forester 2.5xt a few years ago, grand car but very little room inside.

Lexus a good addition as above...

    Pajero? Isuzu trooper?

You can get 2.5 pajero but trooper 3.0.

    Land cruiser?.

    Jeep Cherokee

    Vw toureg

Is it 1998 again or something? :)

Reasonable tax on anything in large SUVs is going to be a challenge, by nature they are big thirsty yokes so emissions will be high. Newer stuff is coming down in emissions but they tend to cost a lot more to buy.

Motor tax on the RX450H is 390 per year:

Thanks again! Really appreciate the suggestions. They are getting more commercial / agricultural? I'm looking for the refinement of a nice car. ideally the porsche cayenne but I think totally impractical and beyond my budget (presumably beyond my budget to repair too). I know I said X5 originally, but I think there's a touch of the scanger off them.... I'm a BMW driver for years, so I'm not anti BMW, just not sure on X5. Ideally something classy or understated (relatively, given I'm looking for a very large 4x4!)

They are all running on commercial tax.

That's probably because they are classed as commercials/crew cabs.

Yea, but no alterations . They're still 5 or seven seater jeeps. Still have glass all round.

You mean boom, economy sort of stuff??

I actually have a very bad back, have had major surgery but I get by. After a recent hire car experience, I couldn't believe the comfort of a high seating position plus with a young family, the space would be handy. In theory, a transit is probably perfect for me! But I actually like cars and would like something on the car end of the scale rather than pajero type...

All things depend on if you want 5 or 7 seats

I drive an Xtrail for the very same reason, good seating position.. I've investigated some other vehicles to see what will work.. Mrs has a Mondeo and its a fantastic car to drive, 2.0TCDi 140BHP and its a pleasure, but for me long term its uncomfortable.
Was talking to a guy the other day that said he finds the VWTouran has a good driving position for his back but I've never sat in one, Touran has good fuel and tax numbers and would be a solid drive... I need my hips and knees near 90degrees to be able to spend time driving and the jeep gives me this easily.

As mentioned, loads of x5 and range rover out there with 333 tax. Look into it a bit further some do meet the requirements and its legit others are borderline/grey area.

Even if the car is legit, the OP may not be entitled to commercial tax

True. Have to have employees to qualify for crew can as far as I know. Technically.

This where it's hard to tell. I know some counties are asking for employees pps numbers to give crew cab tax.
I do wonder though if I just gave my kids numbers would they know the difference ?

I've a 2008 Citroen C-Crosser 7 seater for the past 4 & half years. Its been totally bullet proof - was built by Mitsubishi in Osaka but wit h2.2 HDi Citroen engine . Just routing servicing & 4 new tyres this year. Really like the driving position. Mitsubishi Outlander would be the same but with VW 2.0pdi engine (less tax). There's also a similar offering from Peugeot with the 2.2.
