I have been experimenting making yogurt from lamlac (powdered milk for lambs)

Hot mix of 1 litre of powder mixed with water and 300 grams of aldi low fat natural yogurt.

Left it for 24 hours and while it has a sweet smell it is not thick rather it is watery. Is this more like an actimel?

    What am I doing wrong

I had a calf with severe bloat a few weeks ago and our vet suggested making yoghurt milk for him. I tried it with milk replacer but it didn't work so got some whole milk from a dairy farming neighbour.
I remember Sam Kade saying that he made it from milk replacer. Here is the link http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=97178356

The milk powder I am using (Grennans Brand ) is whey based

I am told that you need semi skimmed to make proper yogurt milk.

I am wondering if I used kefir grains, would this work on the whey based Grennans Brand Milk replacer

Shine once a day is skim based.

Yogurt gets its thickness from the casein proteins in milk and not the whey afaik, probably nothing wrong with the yogurt made off the whey based replacer just a different consistency

I wouldn't be sure but there are a lot of plant based proteins in whey based replacer, any time I used both whey and skim based the calves thrived way better on the skim based.
