Aertel on Sky

With Virgin/Chorus discontinuing its MMDS service this month a relative of mine has switched to Sky. We were under the impression that "old style" Aertel would be available on Sky as it was on Virgin MMDS but I can't seem to get it working. I tried using a scart cable instead of HDMI to connect sky box to TV but still nothing.

Now from reading online I came across some discussions implying that Aertel is no longer available on Sky and that this change happened in around 2014/2015 not at the time of the RTE digital switch over in 2012.

So, to sum up, is Aertel available on Sky?

    Thanks :)

It used to be possible to use when the sky hd box or other box was connected to the tv via scart lead, you then need to goto the scart or av source and the text would work there, it wont work via hdmi but I havent checked in some time...

It's no longer available through Sky. Your relative can cancel their service once they are within the 14 day cooling off period.

It's still there in the broadcast signal. Did you try the TV's text button while connected via the SCART lead?

Problem solved - I connected the scart lead, and went to RTE 1 (not HD) and used the text button on the TV remote control and we have Aertel now.

The thing I was doing wrong was trying it on RTE 1 HD (channel 101 on sky) instead of RTE 1 (channel 277)

    Thanks for the responses

As far as I know, it is also still on Virgin Media analogue. Think it's one of the last, if not the last, tradtional (WST) teletext services in Ireland and the U.K. still running, apart from for subtitles.

    Aertel is so old school.

Even my parents who werent internet savvy a few years ago are now using the internet to get the news.

Dont forget to tell your relative that Rte News Now is on Sky Channel 578.

Racing UK is still running it's text service and is updated daily, that and Aertel are the only ones left that I know of.

I get asked regularly about people looking for Aertel so it may be old school but its what people are used to and want, at this stage red button text should have been added to sky for customers as its getting beyond the joke how long its taking.

I would love to see a red button version on Sky. But I can't see it being high on their list of priorities.

They talked about one over ten years ago, never materialised. There were a couple of these Open TV based text services on Sky in the early years, the BBC one is the only one left and they have flagged that won't be around for too long more either.

I reckon BBC will wait until the forthcoming season of major events are done & dusted first - then they will probably push viewers Online and close the BBC Red Button due to massive cutbacks as the BBC itself will need to fund the FREE TV Licence Fee for over 75's. I recall Sky TV closed the Sky News Active red button service some time ago as part of their cost saving measures.

BBC Red Button likely streams during 2016 as follows:
    • 2016 Summer Olympic Games from Rio
    • 2016 Wimbledon Tennis Championships
    • Glastonbury Music Festival
    • Recorded Highlights of British Open Golf (Sky Sports now have LIVE TV rights)
