Am I right in saying that the newer 11 speed Shimano cassette's do not come with a thin spacer?

So, when you fit an 11 speed Shimano cassette to a Mavic hub - you do not need any spacer (either the thin Shimano spacer or Mavic 10 speed spacer)?

    Hope that makes sense!

I thought you only needed a spacer for putting 10 speed cassettes on the 11 speed freehubs, worth nothing you can't put an 11 speed cassette on an older 10 speed freehub as it doesn't fit.

    Correct,no spacer needed.

Yeah, Just looking for clarification really. The story is... I haven't done much with the new bike since I purchased it - a Canyon CF SL that came with 11 speed Shimano on Aksium wheels. I changed the cassette over to my Ksyriums but couldn't remember if there was a spacer as well. The current setup shows some play in the freehub whiich had me wondering about a missing spacer. Looking at all the tech docs On Shimano's website, indicates there is no spacer on the newer 11 speed cassettes. Obviously there is no need for Mavic's own spacer with 11 speed.

All this points to the freehub being worn and the need to replace at no small cost!

Is there any "play" when it is rotating?

I put a cassette on a brand new wheel last year and was concerned that there was a slight movement/wiggle on said cassette.

Bit of research and it seems that it is quite normal, and there is none when it is moving. I even checked a few "new" bikes in local LBSs to make sure.

Got one replaced on a Campy Zonda recently and it cost €90 - and the fecking rims are 80% worn. Wouldn't have got it done at all if I knew it would cost that.

(The cassette had 'play' on it when turning).

Yeah, there is play and some feedback when the pedals are turning over.

The ksyriums are over 5 years old at this stage. Rims are fine, surprisingly. I did change the body once before, after a couple of years of heavy use. It probably needs changing again. e60 for a new freehub - never remembered it was as much as that!

How were the rims measured for wear? Micrometer?

I'd be interested to know as I'd like to check my own.

No - just a figure I plucked out of the air based on my LBS saying there are "a few months" left. I'm getting a bit edgy about them. I can't see any wear indicators so perhaps they have gone beyond it (or maybe they didn't have any).

I have several sets of wheels now sitting in the shed which were well looked after and otherwise in good condition apart from heavily worn rims. :(

    Cheers, WA.

Mine have no wear indicators either.

I must do a search to see if there's a minimum rim thickness and then borrow a micrometer from work.

Apologies to the OP for the off topic posts. :(

I had a similar question when I replaced a 10sp cassette with an 11sp on 11 speed - compatible Shimano Ultegra wheels.
    Checking this link:

provided the answer - no spacer required. You'll also see you don't need a spacer for your setup.
