Facebook ads - can competitors click to cost me money

I frequently see Facebook ads for competitors, so I'm wondering if I click on the link in the ad, or click on the 'like' button for the competitors page, will it cost them the cost of a click? Will they be able to do the same to me if I submit a paid advert?

If you click on an ad, then yes it will cost them. I expect Facebook have some measures in place to filter out malicious clicks, eg if you click their ad lots of times.

Clicking their Like button won't cost them, unless the button is inside an ad.

And yes, they can do the same to you.

Thanks for the clarification - that's helpful all right.
