I lost my job yesterday and I'm in complete shock. I was on a probationary period and they said it wasn't personal I just didn't fit the business. They gave me 1 weeks paid notice.

I'm in complete shock. I applied for a few jobs already but I'm already finding it hard to get out of bed, I'm so down in myself. I'm not even sure what to do to be honest. I have bills and rent to pay but I have no job. I feel so lost.

Sorry to hear this but unfortunately these things do happen.
Will you be able to get a reference of them?
As for bills and rent. Go to social welfare and sign on. Also make can appointment with you community welfare officer to apply for rent allowance. You can also apply for a medical card.
Get your CV updated and with your additional skills from this job ,get on the hunt again.

Its understandable, don't take it too personally. I remember years ago having to let a guy go during probation because despite being technically brilliant, he grated the people he worked with because they couldn't handle it.

You let a technically brilliant employee go because of jealousy of others? strange way to run a business in my mind.

OP try and think of this as a step forward. The role just wasn't meant to be for you but you will find another which will hopefully be one to sink your teeth into. Try not take it as a personal insult to your work or you as a person. Sometimes these things just don't work out for one reason or another.

That is a shock but not uncommon for people to be let go during probationary periods, as another poster said, do not let it get in on you or take it too personally. There are a multitude of reason why an employer may think a person is not suitable for a role, some of these ideas are irrational, others not, so best to take a deep breath and move on. You have made a great start already be applying for other jobs. Very soon you will have forgotten about this blip.

It happens OP and its not very nice.

I presume you left a job to take the new job? Is there any way back to the old role for the time being even?

To try and make it a constructive experience you could look at yourself and how you may not have fitted in with the business and see are there any changes you could make to overcome that going forward.

Things like this often happen in probationary periods, there is someone where I currently work who is very well educated, is very good at the job but has quite a confrontational manner and goes from zero to aggressively confrontational very quickly. It rubs people up the wrong way and I dont know if this person will be kept on as a result of it.

So try to see if there is anything obvious like that going on. There may not be of course and it may just be that you are not quite what they were looking for but no harm in taking the opportunity to self develop.

Best of luck job hunting, I am sure you will get something quickly - dont forget to get down and sign on asap though so you have something coming in.

It could also be one of those companies that employ people to just shy of their probationary period and then let them go, hiring another person for probationary period. Or the boss has a friend who's got a son /daughter who needs a job. Or they want to hire back someone that used to work there.

Do not take it personally - they gave you the career equivalent of "its not you, its me" type of break up spiel that ultimately means nothing.

The very best of luck in your job hunt.

Depends on the business, if it's something very team focused if you've one person that doesn't fit it can be very off putting. I work in the film industry and on set everyone has to work together or we just can't get anything done and I've seen a high number of talented folk let go because they couldn't work within a team. A few were out right abrasive and rude to everyone else but some just didn't fit. The work requires a lot a rhythm between the team and not everyone is fit for that regardless of their abilities. This carries over to a lot of industries, I worked retail for years in college and I would rather have a happy team of five average workers then one really brillant one.

OP it happens, it sucks! Give yourself a day to get mad/sad, allow yourself that as you have to have to let things out and not bottle them up but you've got to make sure you don't get sucked into a cycle of depression.

What makes you think the other team members weren't technically brilliant or were jealous?

He rubbed people up the wrong way, snided at their suggestions because he thought his were alleys superior.

It would be like a football player who never passes the ball because he thinks he can do all the scoring himself.

God I remember that terrible feeling so well
OP so sorry. Don't immediately conclude that you didn't measure up. I'm sure you did.
Sometimes a new person starts and just for no reason they're like a sqaure peg in a round hole
Especially in a place with a lot of long time staff
I know it's hard but you will feel better if you get up, have a shower, tidy up and get something to eat.

OP, I know this means nothing to you right now as you feel like utter crap, but I was let go from a job once too and it was totally out of the blue.

I was devastated - I went to the social welfare, signed on etc and went job hunting.
When I found a new job, it started me on a new career path and 5 years later I'm doing great. I look back now and I think Jesus - I can't believe I was so upset about that poxy job!! And it really was their loss, as I'm doing so much better (and earning a lot more) than I ever could have hoped to achieve there.

So whilst you feel awful now, just remember that there is more for you round the corner.
We all have many blips in life, this is one of yours and it just means that there is something else meant for you.
    Best of luck
