Honeymoon Ideas

Would love to hear where people have their honeymoons planned for :-)

We are in the midst of planning and would love something fabulous! However we have two children so most likely we will go for just 1 week on our own. It wouldn't be ideal to spend an entire day travelling and jet lagged etc!

Any ideas would be great :-)

Needs to have sun, a pool, lovely beaches, culture and a bit of a nightlife!

Well that's the exact opposite of what we're doing, probably, so not much help! We're planning a European Christmas markets cruise and maybe a few days in Eurodisney .

And if we win the lotto (even though we never play! :P) then we'd probably go to the US and catch a football game and do some travelling around by train up in the North of the country where it's cold. Might as well go all in for a winter wedding, right?

    :D

Wedding is June next year so either early July and if not early September. I'm afraid we will get scorched in that heat :o:D

    Sounds fab :-D

Actually to say the beaches are not 100% must but would be a nice bonus :-)

Sicily would be lovely but maybe too hot at that time of year.

We considered Sicily and Calabria. And Porto and the Douro valley. Also Istanbul, but I probably wouldnt go there at the moment.

I pmd you a link too.

I would go to Santorini :) Its one of my favorite places ever. Its not too far away since you've only going for a week and don't want to spend too much time getting there, and I think it would tick all of your requirements!

We are getting married August 26th but waiting until October to go on Honeymoon as we are going to Electric Picnic the weekend after and then a family wedding the end of September.

Doing 7 nights Florida and 10 nights Cancun, Secrets Maroma, can't wait!!

Great to hear as Santorini is actually on my list! :)

Is there anywhere there you could recommend?

Only downside I have heard is the beaches aren't the best, what do you think?

I'd agree with Sicily, and add Croatia into the mix.

Both beautiful, great beaches, food, and a few options for things to do. Both probably more suited to September than July, unless you can take a lot of heat!

TBH its a good few years since I've been and it was part of an island hopping trip so some of it all blends in to one, but I don't recall being bothered by a lack of beaches. That said, we stayed in a place with an amazing pool and I'm not much of a sun bather anyway so wasnt really bothered by it. I just loved the views and architecture, the vibe and the social scene.

I don't often go places twice because theres always somewhere else on my list but I'd love to go back to Santorini.

I left the honeymoon planning in the hands of my future hubby. We have 2 kids so we are only getting one week away but it's ALL BY OURSELVES!!! :D He picked Gran Canaria. Neither of us has been to that island. My only request was that we stay in an adult only hotel so that's what he booked. Thats pretty much all I know about it, he said the rest is a surprise! I think I may be more excited about the honeymoon than the wedding. Haha.

Haha I hear you!! When you have kids a week alone in your own house is even appealing so getting abroad is major :D

I'm going for somewhere adult only too :D

Actually that's not a bad idea to leave it up to hubby to be! I have organised every other aspect of the wedding so it would be good for him to have a major job ;)

I am also on the honeymoon watch as we are going to be booking it very soon. We're getting married March 25th so fly out maybe 28th/29th and looking for somewhere warm, nice hotel and pool as we are bringing our daughter who'll be almost two. We were thinking one of the Canary Islands but would Sicily/Santorini/Croatia work from a weather point of view that time of year?

The honeymoon and my hen party are only things I didn't have to organise. Have to say it's a weight off my shoulders. I was shocked to learn just how much work goes into organising a wedding. My other half has always been the one to organise and book our family holidays and he has never let us down! I have every confidence in him that our honeymoon will be wonderful. :)

West coast of France can be a lot cheaper and cooler than the usual med destinations, plus they have great kids facilities if you stay at their parks.

I'd say in March/April the Canaries will be a safer bet weather wise, anywhere further north might still be a little cool if you want to be hanging out at the beach or pool.

Chew Chew have you considered Malta?

It's supposed to be stunning and should be around 18°c that time of year

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,092 ✭✭✭catbear

I'd second Malta for March, good sunny days but not scorching hot or humid. got married there myself and it was so easy a lot cheaper than Ireland.

  • Moderators Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭ChewChew

To be honest I had t thought of anywhere else than the canaries for that time of year but when I saw Malta, Sicily and Santorini mentioned it got me thinking.

My daughter will be almost 2 so I don't want somewhere proper scorching and don't mind if we have to wrap up in the evenings so I might check out Malta too!

You could always find somewhere with an indoor pool too so if the days are chilly at all you can still get a swim in :)

That is also a great idea!!! I'm not fussed about beaches but a good pool is a must as she absolutely LOVES water!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭Keane2baMused

Well we were a small group so we stayed in Valetta but for kids and bigger groups there seemed to be plenty of options around St Julians and further up the coast.
Malta is seriously easy. They drive on the same side of the road as we do so hiring a car is easy and there's loads to see if you're into a bit of history. History is my thing and I just love the ancient sites there. THe last time I was there we didn't even use a car as we had a good bus route.

Golden bay is one of the nicest beaches I've been anywhere in the med.

Plus food is very influenced by sicily.
