I'm planning to order a new Astra K 1.4t elite this week or next.

I know there's a few weeks of a wait when ordering a new car.

My worry is that if I order the car and it arrives mid June and gets a 161 plate.

It will then essentially be "old" come July.

Does anyone know if a car is automatically registered once it arrives in Ireland or can I have the dealer delay registering the car until July if needed ?

No it's registered by the dealer whenever they want, they may want to include the sale as part of their first half of year registrations for sales figures, get in touch with them and tell them you want it registered 1st July.

Or play it to your advantage and negotiate the price. Sometimes the dealer will have quota to complete to get bonus - and might be prepared to get a bigger hit just in order to get there....

Tell the dealer you don't want it registered until the 1st July and will collect it then. If they cannot accommodate you then get the delivery time from the factory from them and order the car at the time you know it will not arrive until after 1st July registration change. Ie if it takes two months for a factory order to arrive then don't order it until mid May.

Most manufacturers have a very small expectation for June targets now, so the dealer and manufacturer will probable prefer to holfd it until July anyway to bump up July numbers.

Only reason to reg in June is if there is additional manufacturer discount or a special offer that ends June 30th.

To the OP; if you don't want the car to have 161 plates, why order now? Why not wait until, say, the second week of June? Unless there's some special offer available now that will soon not be available.

There could well be an 8-10 week lead time.

I've ordered a few Insignias with extras in the past couple of weeks and I'm expecting them to be in for late June to be ready for early 162 registration.

If you order mid June, could be September before its in and ready.

Fair point, I suppose. I'm looking at buying a new Tucson in aug/sept and I've been told 3 to 4 weeks delivery time. Depends on the particular car, I suppose. Astras seem to be particularly popular, so possibly a longer wait for them (supply and demand).

Far East stuff tends to be different as chances are your car is already built and on a cargo ship on its way. There is also very little deviation from the set specs whereas the Euro stuff usually offer way more in the way of factory options that are built to order.

Fair point regarding the options, Tucson is built in the Czech Republic http://www.hyundai-motor.cz/english.php so not coming all the way from South Korea, but it is in demand so that may have something to do with lead time :-)

I don't want offend anyone OP but never got this oirish obsession with the reg plates! :-) To me the condition (look, etc.) of the car is far more important than those numbers on front and rear. If I were you I wouldn't worry because any reg gets 'old' after 6 months! ;-) My 2 cents over. Enjoy your new vehicle, happy motoring!

But if your selling the car in the future you need to market to the obsession :D, personally if it was me I would always buy a car in January to get my moneys worth.

I've never thought that way Atlantic Dawn. Interesting point there, I have to agree with you on that, one never stops learning something new.

So let's flip this to the other side. If you were buying a used car and a dealer was selling the exact same car, same condition and similar mileage, etc. One was a 161 and the other a 162 but the dealer was asking the same money for both. Would you expect to buy the 161 for a bit less than the 162? Which one would you go for given both were like for like other than the reg?

:-) If both were the same, I swear to God, the reg wouldn't be a deciding factor! I don't think, 161 one could be had for less to 162, they're same year. (Or is it less? My budget won't stretch beyond 2012, so I'm not experienced in that field. :-) )
And hard to get those three numbers at a glance, both 16 and it's more than enough for me. ;-)
