Hi, we're going to convert old worn-out rusted 70's dairy cubicles to accomodate incalf suckler cows. No probs cutting out old cubicles, whats the ideal size and type of cubicle for the suckler job? Prefer a bolt-on type of cubicle, existing mats are in good shape. We'll have a separate creep area for the calf to lie.
    Any thoughts are welcome.
    Thanks

Gradually replacing mine with o'donovans mushroom cubicle. Hired a mini-digger with a rock-breaker a few years back to make holes in the beds, when a good few were replaced. Are you bolting to the wall or bed?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

The main problem with some of the cubicles in older houses are they can sometimes be a shade short.

Fitted cantilever to an old shed this winter. Very handy job. No breaking out just a good sds drill and off you go. Fast and simple to fit.

Have a few easy fix in the one shed here with dry cows. They sell an upright for each cubicle but we didn't bother with those and put two horizontal box iron lengths running the length of the beds and adapted the brackets for the lower pipe of cubicle. They are great for dries as they move out the way and return to position fairly well so less hurts. Two things about them is the headrail can get shoved back if a cow really bends the upper pipe so not great if they are in front of a wall and sometimes small cows may turn around in them and bigger cows can lie a bit too diagonally on them by throwing their arse against the lower bar and dung on the bed but that's partly because I made the spaces wider as the beds are old and too short and we have a big difference in cow size.

What width and length is ideal?-mine will have a wall to the front, so it seems the cubicle needs to be a little longer to allow for 'lunging' as the cow attempts to rise. Theres a Teagasc article I read which suggests 8.5 feet long...seems a lot..
