"This Friday on The Late Late Show, Brush Shiels is going to set a record - running the first ever Late Late Over-70s Indoor/Outdoor 100-metres Pacemaker Challenge taking him from Fair City's Carrigstown to the Late Late studio floor. And he's hoping to do it in 14 seconds flat. If he manages it, bookmakers Paddy Power will give a donation to the Irish Cancer Society."

If he does break the 100m record he takes it off my uncle :(

    I wish him luck.

So why are you wishing him luck?

Because this is running not boxing. Generousity of spirit rather than mostly moronic pre-event verbals.

Funny enough the uncle used to be a handy amateur boxer in his day too ;)

Easier than not doing so I suppose.

Ah, the nasty side of boxing!

The Brush has been training for this for quite a while now so I'd imagine he is confident of doing it. Hope he makes it.

I'd say your uncle is safe. He's got about as good a shot at breaking the o70 100m WR as I do of running a sub-4 mile. Although, running a 14 flat off 2 minutes training a day for a 70 year old man would be seriously impressive if he does that, he'd be quicker than the Brownlee's over 100m;). I don't think he's chasing the 100m record as that's 12.77:eek:, a bit of reading tells me he was chasing that at one point which while an ambitious target, was completely deluded so I think he's going for the 100m with a pacemaker WR. Never any harm in seeing the bookies hand over some cash so I hope he does it.

Yes but he was targeting both at one time.

It was always the Irish record he was chasing. An article in Irish Runner about a year ago mentioned that as his target.

I assume that there is no real running track in Carrigstown? :)

What's this all about? Is he running inside the RTE studios or what?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

Sounds like he's running from the Fair City set and into the Late Late studio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,687 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

It will help put sprinting on the map. All publicity helps. ;)

I assume he's been passed medically fit to try it?

Bit of an ageist comment there WalshB, no?

I did a hill session today that nearly killed me but I didn't ask the doctor to give me the all clear before I attempted it ;)

It's not ageist. It's common sense, all things considered.

And if your hill session nearly killed you today then it's time to reevaluate your sessions.

Jazus WalshB, you're some man for the sh1te stirring, we've a few silage pits nearby that could do with a bit of a stir if you're available, or if you don't fancy that would you mind doing up a training plan for me, good lad ;)

Are Records recorded as official in non competition conditions. Presume it has been accurately measured & have something more than just a stopwatch.

    All for promoting the sport.

Wonder will they also have Joe Gough on with this event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,283 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I'm not sh1t stirring. In case you don't know sprinting full out is a hell of a strain on your most valuable muscle, your heart. Now, any old person, in this case an OAP, who is attempting this, should get a full and cleared medical report. I know if it was my father I would stress it to him. Nothing to do with stirring, everything to do with common sense and compassion for the welfare of the elderly!

    Good lad.

    Your consideration is endearing ;)

Don't know why, (maybe coz I'm not enjoying the darts much!) but I'll ask...

So if he was 1 year younger do you think he'd need a medical, or would your cut off be 50 and 23 hours 59 seconds or have you some other benchmark altogether?

Now I don't want to get into a evening long back and forth so a succinct response would be appreciated, good lad.

The good lad comment is just a bit too condescending! You are right, no need for a back and forth!

Fair enough, was gently pulling the piss all right but wasn't meant to be offensive. I just had an auld man laugh to myself as I've seen the way threads like this have disintegrated before.

Nothing against you personally (in fact you were previously helpful in the boxing forum)

That's fair enough. No offence taken. My comment was genuine, and I believe very pertinent. I would be an advocator for anyone, regardless of age to be medically assessed before undertaking a really physical activity, and there ain't much more physically challenging than flat out sprinting. And the older the person, as in post say 40 or so, the more I would stress it. I make no apologies for that.

Btw, hope your box training is going well. Keeping it up?

It sounds like good old fashioned common sense but ask any doctor and they'll tell you that so long as you use your common sense it would be a waste of time. By and large my understanding is that preventative medicine doesn't have much evidence to back it up.

How does a 70 year old use common sense trying to break a WR over 100 metres? It's not a walk in the park that he's going for!

Edit: This challenge is not for a WR!

In fairness everyone regardless of age or level of fitness had to produce a medical certificate for the Paris marathon at the weekend. Yes it is a paper exercise but at the end of the day it makes you stop and think about it.

I just witnessed this $hite! I can't be the only person who was hoping that Brush would face plant the "track". I was willing him to fall, thought he was gone at 60 metres but alas

Surely he'd have known going into this that he hadn't a hope in hell of running 14 seconds then.

I just googled this guy. Didn't realise he was a minor celeb. I assumed he was a masters athlete. I agree with TRR. Pile of sh1te indeed!

Came across this article. Is this a piss take? Reads like it is anyway. I sure hope so!

It was a world record attempt as seen through the worldview of The Brush.
Ryan Tubridy kept empasising that the record would be for the first "70 year old man with a pacemaker running 100m in the RTE studios"
If there was a point I think it was about looking after your health and wearing sketchers runners.
Unfortunately he just looked slow - for a man attempting to run 14 seconds for 100m that is.
In fairness if he hadn't pushed the record attempt aspect of the run people would have been impressed with his ability at 70 years of age.

On the same programme Sonia O'Sullivan gave a good interview, wide ranging with an emphasis on Ma's women.
Frank Greally was in the audience, dunno if for the Sonia interview or the record attempt.

Probably for "the record attempt". The way Irish jogger has gone it will probably be the cover story of an upcoming issue!

Came across this. You can see him running towards the end. 15 seconds for 100m they say. That was about 75m he ran. 80m tops.

Ffs!! He ran that "100m" with a hat and coat on.

He's as daft as a Brush!!!

I'd say BP Fallon would whip him over 200m. The Beep is one of the fastest "minor celeb in Dublin in the late 70s" men around.
