Public service card application

    Hi,

I am wondering how to apply for the public service card. I looked online for info but it's very vague on welfare.ie , it doesn't explain whether it is a necessity to receive an appointment to get the card or if you just arrange an appointment yourself. I called up a center, and the guy said that if I have the necessary documentation, then I can just walk into the center and they'll do it. Would this be the case even though I didn't receive an appointment and just decided to do it myself? I made an appointment online and the earliest date they gave me was over a month from now, so it doesn't seem likely that I'd be able to just walk in and get it done. The guy on the phone didn't seem like he'd care if I wasted my time travelling to the center.

Yes, I looked in both these places, neither give me the information I want. They say you need to make a face-to-face application, but they don't specify my query in my OP.

If you call in they might be able to get you sorted but it is unlikely.

I was in Intreo in Kilbarrack on another matter and asked about this. As I had my Passport and Driving Licence with me and some proof of address they organised mine on the spot. I got the slot of someone who hadn't bothered to turn up - girl was delighted as I believe they have a weekly quota to get through.

Just went for my appointment today. First one I could get when I applied back on 8 April! Although I reckon I could've just turned up in between times.

One big annoyance was that my appointment was to be at the Bishop's Square Intreo office. I turned up at my appointed time, place was virtually empty. They sent me across town to the main PSC office (Gandon House, opposite Connolly Station). Hardly an efficient process – like I've nothing better to do :-/

Staff member was really helpful, though. Turnaround time is 7 working days, she said, although it'll likely be sooner. I had to have a photo taken, provide ID and contact details, PPS number. I had to do an electronic signature and provide answers to two security questions for when I activate the card once I receive it.

Apparently there's a backlog because loads of people from the UK are applying for Irish passports in fear of Brexit(?!). You now need the PSC to apply for a first-time Irish passport. There were also about 2000 naturalised as Irish citizens the other week, so it's a busy time.

Does the passport have to be in date?

I just got a letter and because I'm adopted they want my adoption certificate. What is that? I don't think I have it. I'm thinking I'll cancel my appointment. Any disadvantages not having card? I already have a passport. Why can't they just accept this with proof off address.

It's the certificate your parents got when they adopted you.
They want it because it's your proof of name and so on, it can be different to your birth certificate. It's easy to get just ask your parents if they have it and if not a Google search will find out where to apply.

Yes there are disadvantages, you need it if you ever claim social welfare and very soon you won't be able to renew your passport or driving licence without it.

You can apply for one here https://www.birthsdeathsmarriages.ie/product/adoption-certificate/ or here http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/bdm/Certificates/

I just found a certificate saying it's a certified copy of entry in the adopted children register and is stamped issued for social welfare purposes only. I got it back in 1987 for some reason - maybe to claim dole?? Will that be accepted?

According to this related info below, a copy for social welfare purposes should be acceptable for Public Services Card.

A certificate is issued for social welfare purposes at a reduced cost. Evidence it is for social welfare purposes is required, such as a note from the Department of Social Protection.

The fees charged for a certificate are:

€20 for a full standard certificate
€1 for a copy for social welfare purposes, including registration for a Public Services Card (letter from Department of Social Protection required)
€4 for an uncertified copy of an entry in the Register
€10 to have a certificate authenticated (only available from the General Register Office)
€10 for a certified copy of an entry in the Adopted Children Register (can be used for legal and administrative purposes)

Yes a certified copy is the right one.

I'm wondering whether there is any expiry on the PSC cards? Do they need to be renewed or are they indefinite-term?

    Mine expires in 2024

    Mine expires in 2024

Was that from 2014? (10year window). And will it say on the card? My question is in regard to a relative currently in nursing home accomodation, and I haven't seen the card itself yet....

No got mine a month ago.... looks like they are a 7 year expiry thing

    Thanks BowWow and finnharpsboy.

Have answered my other question by looking on Google Images and seeing the expiry date on the examples.

Let's hope my Aunts is also 7years, given they only started in 2012, that would guarantee it's still active :).

Mine (issued earlier this year) expires on the day of my 68th birthday, which seems rather bizzare given that I'll presumably need to be issued with a new one when I turn 66 and am eligible for free travel.

Maybe your retirement age is 68?

Maybe your retirement age is 68?

Even if it was, I'd still be eligible for free travel at 66! So I'm going to have to get a new PSC!

Are you sure you can get it if you're not getting the pension?

    250% certain!

"Everyone aged 66 and over living permanently in the State is entitled to the Free Travel Scheme. Some people under 66 also qualify. If you qualify for free travel, you are issued with a card that you must carry with you when using public transport. In some cases, a Free Travel Companion Card is available which allows a person to travel with the holder (if they are unable to travel alone). Free travel passes are non-transferrable and can only be used by the named person."

I'd have no doubt that when the Old Age Pension qualifying age goes to 67 on the 1st. January 2021 that this will change also.

It'll also change to 68 on the 1st. January 2028....

I wouldn't be so sure. Look at the current situation where retirement age is 65 but you can't get old age pension till 66. This leads to a number of people between 65 and 66 signing on and available for work for a year. In practice they only sign on once a year and it's paid into their bank account and no real evidence of looking for work is sought.

On certs for psc card don't worry as they are always validated on the spot by direct access to records. I did this for six months in a large intreo office.
